Snack ideas for kids.

B is pretty picky, so I'm trying (slowly but surely) to expand his palate.   When it's snacktime, we usually do the same few things over and over: wheat crackers & cheese, yogurt, carrots & dip, apples/ bananas and peanut butter, peach/nectarine, pretzels, grapes.  I just feel like its the same stuff daily and he's tired of it.  He doesn't really care for carrots and whines when he doesn't like the healthier choices.  We have gotten off of the packs of fruit snacks kick solely because I stopped buying them.  So what do your kids snack on?

I'm thinking about getting the V8 fruit/veggie drinks so he will get a serving of veggies.  Probably not the greatest, but oh well.  I've also been doing some pinning of lunch ideas on Pinterest for when he goes to school in a couple of weeks.  I'm just struggling.

Also, the child won't eat meat.  Unless its on a taco.  He loves him some tacos.

  • Hummus and pita chips or guacamole? It wouldn't hurt to try, and if he doesn't like them, then more for you ;)

Yes, good thinking.  He's never had hummus but he can kill some guac. Thanks!

  • What about celery and peanut butter, or peanut butter crackers? Granola bars? G loves graham crackers (which you could also put PB on for some protein--can you tell I love PB?), animal crackers (which you could pair with fruit or something), baked oatmeal muffins (and they're healthy!), fig newtons, pears, peaches, whales/goldfish, applesauce....

Graham crackers = perfect for dipping. Thanks! I think animal crackers would survive half a day and B wouldn't ever get the chance to eat them. And he does like applesauce--yay!  He's been weird about granola bars lately...maybe it's time for a new kind.

  • What if you did fruit kabobs? Would that add any appeal for B so maybe he'd eat more fruit? Or let him pick out his own fruit at the store?

  • Cooper loves larabars, which are typically dates, almonds and other nuts/fruits to give them different flavors.

I think Cooper gets tired of the same foods we eat all the time too, but I really don't care. I'm like- if you're THAT hungry..... you'll eat it. You're a more compassionate mom than me!

  • Protein that Cooper loves: hard boiled egg, beef jerky and deli meat. I know you said he doesn't like meat, so maybe HB egg? Also apple gate makes an all beef grass fed hot dog that Cooper also loves.
  • DS is all about blueberries.  I usually buy frozen since it is way cheaper and he just eats them straight out of the freezer.  I second the hummus recommendation, especially if you're trying to get him some protein since he shuns meat.  My MIL makes a dip thing that is guacomole-like but has avocado mixed with cottage cheese.  That might be a good idea too for the protein since I think cottage cheese is a good source (other cheese too).

  • I make M smoothies sometimes. She really likes them because then she can use her special straw. Plus I can have some too. What about homemade Popsicles? I know I have seen a ton of those recipes on pinterest.

  • Nuts or trailmix, ants on a log (celery, nut butter and raisins on top). Will he eat other veggies with a dip? Cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers, carrots, etc
  • Last night I dipped blueberries in vanilla yogurt and froze them. They were awesome! I bet that would be pretty kid-friendly.

Now I wish I had some celery so I could eat it with peanut butter.  Mmmm.
