picking a dr for the baby?
when did you pick your pediatrician? not sure when we are suppose to do that or what questions we should be asking?

I don't think I'm interviewing anyone as my mom is a school nurse and knows the peds in the area, but I haven't even looked into this at all yet, so I think you're fine!
Also, any doc I pick is not going to have privileges at my hospital since my high risk doc is affiliated with an NYC hospital so I won't use them before birth as I'll use the ped on staff.
My hospital sent me paperwork to fill out about 4 months before the due date and our pediatrician was one of the things we had to provide. So I decided around that time. I knew which practice I wanted to go with and didn't really have to interview them, though we did set up an appt about one month before my due date to have my H see the office and talk with the docotor a little bit about what to expect the first few months. We also gave all of our billing info then so when K was born we just called to make her first app and only had to tell them her name and DOB.
Some questions you might want to ask:
Hours (a big one if you'll be going back to work- you don't want to take time off just for well visits)
How do you reach the doctors if you have questions during hours and during off hours and what's the typical turn around for a response. This is a big one IMO since you will probably call a bunch of times in the first year even if your LO doesn't get sick a lot.
If you have a certain view on vaccinations, make sure they support your decisions.
Day before M was born!
I asked around and prefer doctors associated with New Milford Hospital. I got a few for the dr who happens to be the same pedi as my stepson. So, we went with that practice and then i had to tell my ob/gyn the day before the baby was born so someone would be there for the c-section.
I love their practice and have seen two other doctors in it and like them too...very thorough. One of the pedi's i refuse to see...she was so not on the ball for an "on call" call and my daughter ended up having a seizure. I decided then she will never see her!
before Ava was born, I met with three doctors who were in our plan. One was a large practice that a client of mine who has older kids recommended (I didn't really know other people with kids locally at that time) and the place felt like a zoo and you only got to meet the office manager, and none of the doctors. The second was a sole practitioner and I wasn't comfortable that his back up plan included another local ped, but he'd have no access to your records. And I felt his hours were limiting due to being a sole practitioner. The third was the practice we ultimately went with - I liked them immediately - the hours were good for us, I felt comfortable with the doctor I met, DH and I also liked a second doctor from there who gave a short presentation at the hospital class we took - so that sealed it for us. We "met" two of the 6 and liked them.
They are in NJ, and I delivered in Rockland. So a hospital ped sees the baby and sends paperwork to your ped. Our ped saw us the day we came home for their own baseline.
I tried switching to a local practice when Sam was born - lasted 6 or so months at Bardonia Ped and wasn't happy with them for multiple reasons - it's worth the trip to NJ for us because we are so comfortable with our old practice and their care.
We have a lot of friends locally and so far, the only ones who absolutely love their practice - it's an extra five min drive for us to go to ours, so not worth changing.
