In search of great food and service at a Caribbean resort

Hi all,

DH and I are looking to plan our 5th anniversary trip to the Caribbean this November. We've travelled extensively, but we have a 15 month old, so the last couple of years has been fairly tied to home. We were planning on causing the BVI's just the two of us with the Moorings as we did this for our honeymoon and DH has captained in the past, but we just found out we are 10 weeks pregnant. With that being said, we're looking to find a nice upscale resort that focuses on food and as we need a break and I can't drink. We're looking at 4 - 5 nights in the Caribbean. We've pent a lot of time in The USVI's and BVI'svso we'll probably avoid those. We do love beautiful beaches and like to snorkel extensively. We're not big shoppers outside of local art, so no cruise ship destinations. We're foodies, so We want to focus on great food and pampering/service, including a decent spa. I would love to hear folks Reccomendations. Thanks in advance!

  • How about Anguilla?  A few nights at Cuisinart or Cap Juluca would be fantastic.
  • I would recommend Sandals Cable Beach in the Bahamas (near Nassau) with a butler level room. We stayed there for our HM and loved it. The butler level rooms are very pricey though.  However, the food and service was amazing!!!  You can drink the water out of the tap too. Great snorkeling on the offshore island. Or I also recommend the Grand Cayman Marriott. They also had great service and there you can snorkel right off the beach. There is a reef right there. Cemetery Beach also had great snorkeling. Make sure to swim far enough out though.
  • Thanks for the reccomendations. We have actually considered Cuisinart and Cap Jaluca on Anguilla. I happened to catch the episode of "Feasting on Waves" where they were touring the hydroponic gardens at Cuisinart. However, I recently also read several reviews noting that the service at Cap Jaluca had gone up, whereas the service  had gone down somewhat and decor dated at Cuisinart. Any thoughts?

  • We absolutely LOVE The Rockhouse in Negril - the food is fabulous and so is the spa.  There is also a ton of fabulous restaurants along the cliffs - let me know if you need any recs.  We liked it because it was small and personal, no more AI's for us.

This resort is on the cliffs, so no beach but it's absolutely stunning and the villas are amazing.  I didn't miss the beach a bit :-)

  • Thanks. We actually split a two week trip several years back between Rockhouse and Couples Swept Away. I would agree that both were great. We especially enjoyed dining at the end of the point at Rockhouse, beautiful. Couples was, as always, wonderful. I think our biggest thing with this trip is we want an included dining plan with 4+ star food and a great spa. Please keep the ideas coming.

  • curacao is perfect! check out the lodge kura hulanda. curacao has some of the best snorkeling in the caribbean, such an island flair and is easy to get around on yur own and quieter than most of the islands (15 or so) I've visited. it's my fave.
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • Amanyara on Turks and Caicos.

This isn't a hotel.  Your room is an individual, free-standing pavilion.  You don't see your neighbors.  You have privacy.  Get a pool or ocean pavilion (skip the pond).

The food is amazing, the service is impeccable and the location is spectacular.

  • Ooops!  Forgot to finish...

The Amanyara spa is wonderful.   We have gone there twice and I have had multiple massages.  Their staff is terrific and the setting is tranquil and elegant.  You never feel rushed and the apple mint line juice you are offered at the end is delightful.

I am also a huge fan of the snorkeling.  You can just roam the coastline off the resort or go out in their twice daily pontoon boat for snorkeling in their little reef less than 5 minutes away.  Afterwards, they bring out scented, chilled towels for you to wipe your face with.

There is no loud bar scene - everything is low-key and well done.  This really is a place for romance.

We stayed at Couples Negril for our HM and definitely preferred the food/service/vibe at RH to CN.    Unfortunately, Delta(our preferred Airline) doesn't offer a ton of flights past Jamaica so a lot of these places look awesome, but I refuse to do a 20+ hour flight with layovers.  Actually, I pretty much detest layovers in general, so it looks like Jamaica will be our home away from home :-)  Let us know where you end up booking.

  • The best food I've had in the caribbean had to have been in Aruba.  So many delicious restaurants on the island.  We stayed at the Radisson and the Marriott over the years which are not all inclusive but you definitely don't want to go the AI route when in Aruba.  The food on the island is too amazing.I actually preferred the Radisson.  The grounds were much more "lush".  I've heard great things about Bucuti also but I've never stayed there.

  • Sandals Royal Caribbean. It was amazing! However, I'm not sure if children are allowed so that being said, check out Beaches Resorts...they have a lot of amazing locations and they allow children. Happy Vacation!
