i'm allergic to my house

i'm not married yet (still live with my family...i'm only 21) but tehre isn't a cleaning board on The Knot, so I'm here.

Anyway...my whole house has really thick carpet from the 80's that seems to be a trap for dust.  I dislike vaccuuming becuase the vaccum we have is so heavy and taking it through all 3 levels is a chore in itself!   My room in particular seems very dusty even if I vaccuum.  I keep waking up with congested sinuses and end up with a headache that lasts most of the day.  Does anybody have tips for keeping dust to a minimum in between vaccuuming?

Re: i'm allergic to my house

  • 1) stand alone air filter for your room

    2) dust shelves and ceiling fans regularly to keep dust to a minimum

    3) get a small vacuum for yourself and your room

If you are in a humid climate (or one that is not dry and arid) you may have a bad case of dust mites in the home (and be allergic to them). If that's the case keep your bedding clean, clean, clean (including getting a new pillow with a dust mite cover).

  • I don't have any additional tips on minimizing the dust, but if you are going to be stuck with that carpet, I would suggest going to an allergist to address your dust allergy.  I also have a dust allergy and have been getting shots (and taking medicine) for that and other allergies and it seems to be helping.
  • If you can you should get rid of the carpet since it decreases the air quality in your home.  I would also suggest that you get rid of dairy from your diet for a few days to see if it's making the problem worse.  I know it sounds crazy and you're doctor would say that it doesn't make sense but for a lot of people dairy makes allergies worse. Check out this article from the New York Times:

    http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/07/24/more-on-milk/

I have allergies to cats and dust and of course I have both in my house.  Someone suggested that I stop eating dairy so that I could stop taking Claritin and after a few days my allergies went away.  Now I only eat dairy every now and then and stop when my allergies act up.

Dairy includes milk, cheese, yogurt, butter etc.  Try it.  It's free and less time consuming than allergy shots and constantly dusting.  If that's not the problem you can always go back to eating dairy.

     I hope this helps.
