Anybody do Zumba (or other aerobics classes)-shoe rec?

I started doing zumba about 3.5 months ago and really love it. I go 3-4 times a week.  I was just wearing my regular sneakers which are running shoes and definitely notice that they stick alot and make it hard to do certain moves. So I've been on the lookout for a good shoe to use for them. I did google and found some options.  Most places recommend dance sneakers (like Nike Musique) but reviews say the split sole isn't good for people with feet/arch problems (me!).  I got a Ryka transition pair that are supposed to be good for zumba and didn't have the split sole, which they are good in allowing me to do the moves.  But they really don't have enough support.  I have foot problems as it is and they are just causing me too much pain.

Anybody have any recs for a good workout shoe that has good support but not a ton of traction so that I can use it for zumba?  I didn't find anything I really liked at DSW but plan to go to Dicks sporting good today and look.

  • The sad truth is that you will probably have to wear a running shoe to get the support. I have the Ryka Transitions too, they are comfy for about the first 20 minutes and then my feet kill. I also have the Ryka Revive which are much better than the Transition, they are a bit more like a running shoe. But I have issues with plantar fascitis so my Asics are really the most comfortable. I usually alternate shoes between the Revive and Asic and it helps a lot, although I really haven't been going to Zumba since I found TRX love which is totally opposite of Zumba!

Thanks. That's what I was thinking. Asics has some cross trainers that look like they might be a good in between. My running shoes are Asics and I really like them. I'm hoping maybe if I ask somebody at Dicks sporting goods they might be able to give some advice. I really would like a little less traction than the ones I have because sometimes I'm afraid I'm going to twist my knees! But with bad arches and tendonitis I need support.

  • I go to zumba 3-4 times a week and I have to wear my running shoes. I just can't wear the flat soled ones with no support. I guess I've learned how to adapt the moves with the running shoe. You have to be more careful to pick up your feet and not just slide them.   I just had a conversation with my instructor about shoes (she can't wear the flat shoes either!), and she just got a pair of Nike Reax. She and I have similar foot issues (plantar fascitis). She's really happy with this pair of shoes, and she said they're even reasonably priced.

  • Another option that my instructor recommends (and wears herself as does the other instructor) in Reebok Zigs. Meghan got a pair and does Zumba in them, she may be able to elaborate.

My husband recently got a pair(obviously not for Zumba) and he loves them. He says that they are nice and supportive. I tried them but could not get over the looks.

Yes, I have been wearing Zigs for almost a year now to do Zumba.  Before that, I was just using some random pair of Nikes and would get a lot of pain on the outside of my foot.  The Zigs have been super comfortable and I feel like they give me a lot of support.  I also recently started running, and where before I would have pain (shin splints, etc.), these have been great. (the kind are got are actually for running)

Kris is right, there are definitely some fug styles of them out there.  I was able to get mine on sale, so I didn't mind it much.

  • I wear skechers Danza.  I love them.  They are super light weight and having a pivot circle on the bottom.  You could always add an insert if you need more support.
