When is it time to go to a toddler bed?

Logan is still in his crib and it's still fine - he doesn't try to climb out or anything. Now I keep thinking that I should start to get him in a toddler bed? 90% of the time he usually just goes right asleep. Some nights he still cries and I feel like he would get out of his bed if he were in a toddler bed. I completely forget from what I did with Dan. When is the right time?

  • I've been told by many people to wait until he can climb out or you feel that it's a safety concern in some way to move him...we are about to move Aisling though because with the new baby coming next month, it's just making more sense for us to give her a "big girl room" rather than buy a second crib, knowing she would most likely be out of her crib soon enough anyway.  So far, she likes laying in her new bed- it is built and in the new room, but we have to wash the sheets she just got for her birthday, and move her clothes over to the new room and all that jazz.  I also still need to get bed rails.  We'll probably actually transition her full time after we return from vacation.

  • I have no idea when the right time is, but we decided to move DD when she was really getting squished in the crib, which for her was right around 2.5 years old. Most of my friends who also had kids that never tried to escape the crib, moved them into toddler beds around 2.5-3.5 depending on their own life circumstances (new babies, moving, etc).

I was prepared for a nightmare of putting her back in her bed over and over again because when she was in the crib she cried every night at bedtime and stalled like a pro. However, she shocked me and seamlessly transitioned to a full sized bed with no issues. She doesnt get out of bed either but she does still stall which is our new bedtime issue.

  • We moved Brooks around 10 months since he WAS climbing out of his crib and I was terrified and he hated his crib. He LOVES his "big boy bed".

  • Great, I guess I am safe for awhile longer then. He doesn't try to climb out at all and I am ok waiting. :)

This. Several months ago, I noticed that she wasn't sleeping as well and seemed to constantly wake herself up by smacking her face, hands, legs, whatever on the railings. We decided to give it a try and was amazed that she didn't get up at.all. I told her that if she got up she would go back into her crib which did the trick. There was no crying, fussing, nothing, she is actually excited to sleep in her 'big girl' bed every night. Her bed was a convertible bed so we converted it into a double which is huge but she loves it. Only once did I find her downstairs in the middle of the night wanting water but other then that no problems. She gets up now and comes in our bedroom every morning, typically waking me up for the day :)
