Poll: How Neighborly Are You?

If someone new moves into the neighborhood, do you make an effort to introduce yourself?

If a neighbor celebrates a major life event (graduation, baby, marriage, etc), do you do anything for them?

Do you hang out with your neighbors socially?

Do you know personal information about you neighbors (names, occupations, pets, etc?)

Overall, do you like your neighbors?

Anything else neighbor related you'd like to add?

Re: Poll: How Neighborly Are You?

  • If someone new moves into the neighborhood, do you make an effort to introduce yourself? Not really. Not unless we happen to see them outside.

If a neighbor celebrates a major life event (graduation, baby, marriage, etc), do you do anything for them? This situation has not come up, but we probably wouldn't.

Do you hang out with your neighbors socially? No.

Do you know personal information about you neighbors (names, occupations, pets, etc?) Our next door neighbors, yes. I wouldn't say we're friends, but we talk often and know a bit about each others lives.

Overall, do you like your neighbors? The ones we know, yes.

Anything else neighbor related you'd like to add? DH and I (me, moreso) are so anti-social and it kind of sucks. Not in a mean way, but I'm very shy and I can never strike up a conversation, etc. Our next door neighbors are very social and they keep us up to date on neighborhood gossip/happenings.

  • If someone new moves into the neighborhood, do you make an effort to introduce yourself? In our old neighborhood, yes.  In our building now, not so much.  We are on the ground floor of our building so we have a front and a back door.  It's more convenient for us to use our back door so we don't really ever see our neighbors because they all have to use the front entrance.

If a neighbor celebrates a major life event (graduation, baby, marriage, etc), do you do anything for them? I would probably if I knew them.

Do you hang out with your neighbors socially? In our old neighborhood, yes.  We had 2 good sets of friends we would rotate and hang out with at each other's houses every weekend.

Do you know personal information about you neighbors (names, occupations, pets, etc?) Names of a few but that's about it.  We actually think our one neighbor kicked the bucket because he hasn't been outside smoking as per usual but since we don't know them really (other than "hello"), we feel awkward asking his wife where he is.  She still parks in the handicap spot but she isn't the one that needed it.

Overall, do you like your neighbors? Other than our neighbor upstairs having a botanical garden on his balcony that constantly dirties up our outside furniture, we have no issues with any of them.

Anything else neighbor related you'd like to add? I'd love to eventually buy in a "Mayberry" like neighborhood.  I'm extremely social and I would love a neighborhood where everyone watched after each other's kids, hung out and watched the games together, did neighborhood cookouts/bonfires and such...but I also realize it's not 1962 and those types of areas don't exist like they used to.

  • Obviously, there's a reason I'm asking! The house across the street sold recently and my sister was appalled that DH and I didn't introduce ourselves, take them a cake, etc.

If someone new moves into the neighborhood, do you make an effort to introduce yourself? No.  We would talk to them if we were all outside but we wouldn't make a speci trip.

If a neighbor celebrates a major life event (graduation, baby, marriage, etc), do you do anything for them? They've done it for me but I don't really know them well enough to know something major is happening.

Do you hang out with your neighbors socially? No

Do you know personal information about you neighbors (names, occupations, pets, etc?) I always joke that I can name all the animals but not the people! I refer to them as Trapper's dad or Keyo's house.  I know a fair bit about our one neighbor and her son but I don't even know her husband's name.

Overall, do you like your neighbors? Yes, they are all quiet and peaceful.  No drama.

Anything else neighbor related you'd like to add?  There aren't many young couples and I wish there were.  I would like our future children to have playmates

  • SK - I am exactly the same way.  I don't want to come across as snobby, mean, etc but I'm introverted and reaching out to new people is outside of my comfort zone. I'd be more than happy to talk to them if they struck up the conversation.  DH is pretty similar.

  • If we see them outside, then yes, we introduce ourselves.

Our neighbors had a baby 2 months after we moved in, but we didn't do anything for them. When I had DD, they gave us a gift Embarrassed Otherwise, I don't really know many neighbors well enough.

    No.

Yes, I know the neighbors we share a wall with pretty well, but not the ones on the opposite side. I know a few peoples' pets' names' but that's about it.

Yes, they are relatively quiet and drama-free.

We're pretty shy, plus we get home late and DD goes to bed early (7/7:30), so we don't really socialize too much with the neighbors. Plus, our house faces the main road and not the "inside" of our neighborhood, so we miss out on a lot of gossip, etc.

  • If someone new moves into the neighborhood, do you make an effort to introduce yourself? nope.

If a neighbor celebrates a major life event (graduation, baby, marriage, etc), do you do anything for them? We live in a TH, with that being said, on the left we have a great neighbors, on the right side, no so much. I consider our neighbors on the left our friends. We went to K&K's wedding and we celebrated K's college graduation.

Do you hang out with your neighbors socially? Neighbors on the left yes.

Do you know personal information about you neighbors (names, occupations, pets, etc?) I know the personal info of both set of neighbors. As I said before we are friends with our neighbors on the left and the right, I've looked them up via MD judicary case search and Taxation website.

Overall, do you like your neighbors? One set yes, the others I wish bad bad things would happen to them!

Anything else neighbor related you'd like to add? I wish I could build a force field around the right side of my house that way I could block out how stupidly loud my neighbors get, I also like to unlock her back gate and let those 5 yappy ass dogs run free. I really wish my neighbors daughter and her kids would move far far away, but it looks that's never going to happen.

  • If someone new moves into the neighborhood, do you make an effort to introduce yourself?  It's a rare event on our street so we should really be better about it - but we still haven't met the one family that's moved in since us.  One of our next door neighbors' houses is currently on the market, though, and I would *love* for a young-ish family to move in.

If a neighbor celebrates a major life event (graduation, baby, marriage, etc), do you do anything for them?  We are close to three, maybe four, families on our street and for them, absolutely.

Do you hang out with your neighbors socially?  Same thing - we do make it a point to visit and do an occassional dinner with the handful of families that we know well.  Brad, not surprisingly, is more the social butterfly on his own.  Nine times out of 10, when he heads outside to do yardwork, I'll find him an hour or two later chatting with the neighbors instead.

Our neighbors, on average, are quite a bit older than us - but I think they all tolerate the "new kids down the street" pretty well and really enjoy having a toddler around for a change. ;)

Do you know personal information about you neighbors (names, occupations, pets, etc?)  I'd say we know about a good number of them considering how spread out everyone is.  Quite a few people are out regularly walking/running/walking their dogs, and that's a big help in meeting people.  One of the other neighbors also throws a bonfire every year around Halloween, and that's a nice way to see people we wouldn't normally see.

Overall, do you like your neighbors?  Very much - we're pretty lucky to be surrounded by such good people.

Anything else neighbor related you'd like to add?  This won't surprise anyone that's met him - but good neighbors was WAY up on DH's list when we were house hunting.  Personally, I would have been happy with any neighbor that didn't do anything disruptive - being left alone (a la my NY existence) makes me perfectly happy.  But DH had dreams of new best friends and regular cookouts.  I think we did pretty well in finding a balance between privacy and a great community.

If a neighbor celebrates a major life event (graduation, baby, marriage, etc), do you do anything for them? yes, if it's one that we're close with.  Our neighbor across the street shocked us with baby gifts when both kids were born.

Do you hang out with your neighbors socially? no

Do you know personal information about you neighbors (names, occupations, pets, etc?)  yes, for our across the street neighbors (two houses).  They're the only ones we really talk to.  The others keep to themselves.

Overall, do you like your neighbors? Yes

Anything else neighbor related you'd like to add?

  • If someone new moves into the neighborhood, do you make an effort to introduce yourself? We don't really make an effort, but we will if we happen to be outside at the same time

If a neighbor celebrates a major life event (graduation, baby, marriage, etc), do you do anything for them?  no

Do you hang out with your neighbors socially? no, we will chat for a few mintues if we are all outside together

Do you know personal information about you neighbors (names, occupations, pets, etc?) We live in a TH so the two neighbors on each side of us we know their names, kids names, phone numbers, pets, and little personal details.  We also know a few others in the same court, like the couple that have twins that we see once a month or so, or the other young couple we see in passing, but not very well.

Overall, do you like your neighbors?  we've never had an issue with any of our neighbors.  We like them, but with the exception of one couple they are generally in differnt stages of life.  On one side they have older teenagers and the other side they are retired and childless and travel a lot so just different focuses right now for all of us.

Anything else neighbor related you'd like to add?  I think one of the things that keeps us from really chatting and seeing much of each other is the mosquitos.  Around us they are seriously bad, when you go outside within 5 minutes there are visable swarms around you.  We were out blowing bubbles with DS 2 weeks ago and forgot bug spray, he had no less than 10 bites just on his little legs, and we were only out there for 15 minutes.  We all complain about how bad they are when we see our neighbors.  I think if being outside were more enjoyable for all of us then we would probably know them a little better.

  • If someone new moves into the neighborhood, do you make an effort to introduce yourself? Nope. We may say hi if we happen to see them outside, but I don't get into introducing myself, asking their names, etc. I'm not a terribly friendly person :/

If a neighbor celebrates a major life event (graduation, baby, marriage, etc), do you do anything for them? We haven't, but we also haven't been aware of any major events because, y'know, we don't know the neighbors. One did give us a sweet basket of gifts when M was born and she's now due around the same time that I am. I'm hoping to remember to leave something small for her on the doorstep, but we'll see if that actually happens.

Do you hang out with your neighbors socially? Nope.

Do you know personal information about you neighbors (names, occupations, pets, etc?) We know the name of one of the guys who lives next door. He's occasionally mowed our lawn for us and we've had to call him a few times to ask him to turn down the music on party nights. He has a revolving door of roommates, and we never bother to get to know them. On the other side of him we know the names of the couple, their kids, and their cats. We got two of our cats from them when we moved in, the wife is very friendly, and she's the one due in September with her third.

Overall, do you like your neighbors? I'm mostly indifferent. The issues we've had in the past were all parking related and the situation has improved as some have moved and because we now only have one car. But I don't feel a need to be friends with them. Like I said above, I'm not very friendly.

Anything else neighbor related you'd like to add? I'm well suited to our dream of living on a huge plot of land with no close neighbors. It would suck for the kids in a sense, but I'm hoping that if our dream comes true, the vast amount of space they'll have to explore and plan on will help counter the lack of close kids to play with easily.

  • If someone new moves into the neighborhood, do you make an effort to introduce yourself? We don't really live in a neighborhood. There is a group (5 of us) of houses though that are particularly close. Of these 5 houses one just went off the market and is going to eventually be rented out. I personally probably won't make an effort to introduce myself, DH usually takes care of that.

If a neighbor celebrates a major life event (graduation, baby, marriage, etc), do you do anything for them? With the neighbors we are close with, yes. They were all invited to DD's 1st birthday as we were to their childrens 1st bday.

Do you hang out with your neighbors socially? Yes, DH and the one neighbor who are the same age as us built a bar in the neighbors shed. Occasionally, the other neighbors will hang out in the shed and we have plans to have an annual Christmas party.

Do you know personal information about you neighbors (names, occupations, pets, etc?) We know names, kids names, pets names, but not the exact occupations of our neighbors.

Overall, do you like your neighbors? Yes

Anything else neighbor related you'd like to add? We really couldn't have gotten better neighbors than we did. One set is the same age as us with a little boy 6 months older than DD. Two other sets are older, but are equally as fun. We all just hope and pray that the dump next to us gets rented to some decent people.

  • If someone new moves into the neighborhood, do you make an effort to introduce yourself? No, because DH will beat me to it. He suffers from verbal D.

If a neighbor celebrates a major life event (graduation, baby, marriage, etc), do you do anything for them? generally no but it hasn't really come up yet

Do you hang out with your neighbors socially? we are kind of close with an older couple across the street....they have high school/college age kids but we get along with them really well. a couple of times they have invited us into their back yard for a drink, hot dog, whatever and we have done the same.

Do you know personal information about you neighbors (names, occupations, pets, etc?) I count on DH to obtain that info, he knows everything about everyone because he will just stand outside and talk. And talk.

Overall, do you like your neighbors? Its 50/50. Some are really cool and some are trashy and gross.

Anything else neighbor related you'd like to add? yeah, I wish people in my neighborhood would quit renting out their units, because the renters that keep moving in are getting trashier and trashier. And don't care about things like reserved parking spaces, keeping your property values up, pulling weeds and cutting grass etc. But I am a hypocrite because the second it would make financial sense for us to rent out our place and get the F out of there, I am totally doing it.

  • If someone new moves into the neighborhood, do you make an effort to introduce yourself? If it was an immediate neighbor, adjacent to our house/yard, yes.  But they are just down the street, no.  This has happened once in the 5 years we've been at our house.

If a neighbor celebrates a major life event (graduation, baby, marriage, etc), do you do anything for them? generally no but it hasn't really come up yet

Do you hang out with your neighbors socially? a tiny bit.  All of our immeidate neighbors are quite a bit older (like 70s, 80s, etc.) they're nice, but there's not alot of commonality there.  We know a few of the people w/ younger kids but there are either weirdos or we just don't "click".

Do you know personal information about you neighbors (names, occupations, pets, etc?) Yes - DH gets more of the dirt than I do, b/c he sees and talks to everybody when he's doing yardwork, etc.

Overall, do you like your neighbors? They are fine, but I just wish it was more neighborhood-y - I know people that live in neighborhoods w/ regular cookouts, kids parades, etc. we don't have any of that and it makes me sad since I thought that was a big part of Columbia's appeal. . ..

Anything else neighbor related you'd like to add? I really wish there were more young people.

If someone new moves into the neighborhood, do you make an effort to introduce yourself? I'd typically say yes, but a couple of younger girls (like maybe 20-22) just moved in a couple houses down and I haven't officially met them...I don't have a desire to, either, for some reason.

If a neighbor celebrates a major life event (graduation, baby, marriage, etc), do you do anything for them? If I know about it, yes. My neighbor is having a baby, I'll get her a gift.

Do you hang out with your neighbors socially? Some of them. I live in a townhome community, we had a Memorial Day BBQ with our little area. A few of them came over to my Christmas party, too.

Do you know personal information about you neighbors (names, occupations, pets, etc?)  Some of them.

Overall, do you like your neighbors? Some of them.

Anything else neighbor related you'd like to add? I'm friendly to all my neighbors, but only have a friendship with a couple of them.

  • If someone new moves into the neighborhood, do you make an effort to introduce yourself? We've only been in our house for 4 months and it's not really in a neighborhood. We are in the middle of two houses and then there is a courtyard far behind our house. We're pretty friendly with the neighbor on one side and only DH has met the renters on the other side.

If a neighbor celebrates a major life event (graduation, baby, marriage, etc), do you do anything for them? n/a

Do you hang out with your neighbors socially? no

Do you know personal information about you neighbors (names, occupations, pets, etc?) the one neighbor - yes

Overall, do you like your neighbors? yes

Anything else neighbor related you'd like to add? I'm not big on neighbors. As long as they're quiet, their pets are quiet and they don't annoy me, I'm happy.
