If eating healthy is cheaper...
then what the heck am I doing wrong?! I feel like we spend way too much on groceries and when I compare things (lean beef vs fattier beef; wheat bread vs white bread; etc) I know it would be cheaper to get the things that are less healthy. Show me the light people.
Re: If eating healthy is cheaper...
We easily spend $500-$600 a month and we used to spend half that when we ate junk (and the amount we spend is only going UP as the boys get bigger). People say it's cheaper, but it hasn't been for us. Sorry, but spending $.99 on a box of mac and cheese with a can of tuna is way cheaper than what I make for dinner.
However, just think of it as investing in your health! Hopefully, the healthier you are, the less money you'll spend on prescriptions, doctor visits, etc. Especially as we age.
Bri showed me the light at Sunflower market! They do their previous weeks' sales AND the next weeks' sales on Wednesday. So, basically twice the amount of stuff is on sale. I did that when I bought produce there.
Now we do a CSA with our CF box. It's $40 every two weeks (which isn't enough, but it lasts us about 7-10 days). Also, we're getting a cow soon which will be hormone/antibiotic/blah blah free and grass fed for about $4.50ish/lb. Which is super cheap compared to buying it at the store. Especially the steaks and stuff which can easily be $17-$22/lb. The chicken I buy from this company (also Bri recommended
), DARP Processing, and they come into OKC every 2 weeks. Their chicken breasts/tenders are $3.50/lb (and if I buy the same stuff from the health food center it's $6.99/lb).
Cutting back on things like 100 calorie packs, smart ones, etc helps a lot too. I know you don't eat a lot of that stuff, but those babies were expensive when I was doing WW and I ate a ton of it.
Sunflower is off NW 63rd and May. So really far from you
CSA is community shared agriculture (I think that's what it stands for). Like a co-op or produce share. A big group of us buy a bunch of fruits and vegetables and split it up. It's a cheaper way to get produce. I really don't know how you'd go about finding one, I only know about this one because it's at my Crossfit. You could google it? Maybe someone else knows?
The chicken people are DARP Processing. I'm not sure what their website is, but you can google it. They send out e-mails when they're coming into town and you place your order ahead of time. I bet you can get on their mailing list via their website. They usually have a big van and in OKC they meet at the Bass Pro Shop downtown. You pay them there and pick up your order.
I found their most recent email to me, they're having a pick-up on Thursday!:

Sunflower Market is one of my favorite stores. I'll happily drive the hour from Stillwater to OKC once a week to shop there [and I've started giving my sister money to shop there for me during the week]. Their sales on produce and meats are fantastic compared to the crap I get stuck with at Walmart.
I really need to look into a CSA up here. Our Farmers Market is small, and I'm not a big fan of it...so I've really started doing all my grocery shopping in OKC when I'm down there. We probably spend about $300 for just me and JJ; it'll double once I move to CO and Joe's thrown in the mix [he eats like crap right now, but I'm working on that with him].
Curious - what kind of milk do you guys drink, if you drink milk at all?
We do Braums skim milk. Nothing fancy here. I really love the dark chocolate almond milk. Yum.
We drink 2% milk. I used to get skim or 1%, but then I got scared when I started reading about it. I'd rather have the extra calories and less processing.
my bookshelf!
Bloggy
I am a Sunflower girl all the way! I never buy anything at Walmart anymore because honestly, Sunflower is cheaper when you buy according to their ad and the produce and meat are SO much fresher. I would think about making the drive (on Wednesday) Jamie, honestly... Both ads are online right now for tomorrow. I buy 95% of our meat and produce there, the rest of our stuff comes from Homeland or a farmers market. I don't do DARP anymore but that is just because I am typically working on Thursdays, which is often when they come (unless that has changed). Once this baby comes and I start cooking again we will probably buy a cow because it is much cheaper than buying grocery store beef (plus, I can only cook grass fed, the other stuff makes me sick now). Chicken and beef are about the only kind of meat we eat so I just buy a bunch at a time.
The thing about saving money on the healthy stuff is when that good sale comes up, you buy as much as you can eat before it goes bad. B's diet consists of a ton of fruit and dairy. That girl could live on fruit and yogurt and be totally happy.
I will only drink Braum's milk, we go through 3 -4 gallons a week. 1% for J and I and whole for B.
Once I start to cook on a normal basis again our grocery budget will probably be about $600 a month but that is with all of us eating lunch that was prepared at home. Obviously, I am a terrible cook while knocked up... Our grocery budget is $700 to $800 right now but that is because I am currently buying a ton of pre-made/ prepackaged stuff on top of going out to eat all the time.
Also, at SF if you take reusable bags they take something off your total for each one, maybe .10 each or something. Every little bit helps. lol
About this chicken; is there a minimum amount you have to order?
Just popping in to say I
Sunflower/Sprouts too. We got all our groceries there on Sunday. My Homeland only sporadically has pork shoulders (carnitas in the crockpot!) and SF had them on sale for super cheap. If you shop their sales, then you do very well there.
Also, they make chocolate and PB pretzels. They come mixed in the bulk area. Honestly, I know they aren't the best for me, but I know they aren't the worst, either, and they are so, so good. I might have to run by tomorrow and get some since they only had PB ones on Sunday!
I also love DARP chicken. I get it through the co-op once in awhile. When we finally get the door put from the house into the garage and get a chest freezer, I'll be hitting up the co-op with a large beef and chicken order.
I love Sunflower (called Sprouts now - hope it doesn't change much). I spend around 250/month on groceries and toiletries and don't buy junk. It's a matter of what you buy and how much time you're willing to spend to prepare it. For example, a bag of dried beans is cheaper than a can and gets you 4x the beans, but you have to soak and cook them. Buying a head of broccoli and cutting it yourself is usually cheaper and yields more than a pre-cut bag. Lentils and beans are cheap. I don't buy red meat or even chicken any more either, so that helps. Tilapia tends to be a cheaper fish and I'll get salmon on sale.
Also, chicken breasts and tenders were 1.99 a pound and red bell pepper were 3/$1 @ Sunflower/Sprouts.
We spent $70 and that was a weeks worth of produce, and probably at least 2 weeks worth of meat as well as yogurt to last a week or so.
Some healthy stuff is cheaper than the less healthy versions (eggs vs poptarts for breakfast), but yeah, it generally is a little bit more expensive. I have staple vegetables I always buy, but I generally choose fruit based on what's in season since it'll be priced lower than out-of-season produce. I switched from iceberg lettuce to romaine several years ago and more recently to spinach. The darker greens are more nutritious and only cost ~50 cents more per bunch than iceberg lettuce. I also try to buy the chunk cheese and shred it myself vs. the pre-shredded bags. The cost is the same, buy try comparing the ingredient lists sometime!
I also buy in larger quantities when I can, like a 32 oz container of yogurt rather than 6-8 single-serve containers. Does your grocery store have bulk bins? Prices there can be better than the bags on the shelves, and you can choose how much you want to get. A larger "family pack" of meat is often slightly cheaper per pound than the smaller packages, so I just break it up into smaller portions at home and freeze some of them in ziplocs or reuseable containers. I've also recently discovered than ground beef is significantly cheaper per pound at the butcher counter at Crest vs. their same prepackaged containers.
I think the biggest decrease in my bill has actually been from cutting down on the amount of processed food I buy. I've always bought lots of produce, meat, and dairy, so instead of replacing it with something else I've just decreased the amount of snacking I do.
What do you mean that's the wrong side? Tastes great to me!
