Also...baby taking Zantac

Has anyone's baby had to take Zantac? If so do you have any tips on administering it? The stuff tastes revolting and Alex gets so upset when I give it to her.

Shouldi ask the pharmacy to flavor it? Give it to her in a little breast milk? Right now I'm giving it to her in 2 half doses or she spits the lot right out (not that I blame her!), but she looks so horrified when I give it to her and generally screams and chokes trying to get rid of it. It's awful. : (

Re: Also...baby taking Zantac

  • We mixed Emma's in her formula and she didn't notice it.  Has she had a bottle of breastmilk before?  if so, try mixing with an ounce or two.
  • Jack hated the taste at first but now reaches for the syringe because I think he realizes it helps him.

My tip for administering doses - I lay Jack on the couch and when I put the syringe in his mouth, I point it towards the back of the mouth into one of the cheeks.  Then I slowly depress the plunger instead of trying to shoot it all in at once.  He would always spit it back out if I gave it to him too fast.

I guess if that fails you could try giving it in breastmilk but not too much - you don't want to waste the milk if she still won't take it.

  • Not sure if they can flavor it but I'm not sure if I'd put it in her milk if she's only eating milk at this point. It can make the milk taste bad and turn her off to the milk. Just put it in her cheek and try to keep it away from taste buds.

  • Had an appointment with the pediatrician today for her one month check up. She's a chunky monkey at 10lbs already so she's obviously eating well!

He said not to flavor the stuff at this point because he worries about allergy to the flavoring.

I thought it was meant to be given half an hour before feeding? I don't always manage to do it far enough in advance, but I think if I give it to her in milk it would be in a tiny bit just to dilute it a little. I do try and put it in her cheek, but she still manages to choke on it and spit it out if I put in too much at once. I just have to give it slowly. She just looks so horrified every time.

Did you find that it helped and if it did how long did it take?

  • DD didnt seem to mind Zantac...it was the prilosec that sent her into fits....so I have no tips on administering it, but just wanted to add that the Zantac did help DD almost immediately. After probably 2 doses she was a totally different baby. We thought she was just a grumpy and ill spirited child until she got the medicine!

That being said, due to its sensitive dose range, we needed to change the dosage frequently as her weight changed and you could definitely tell when a dose change was needed because she went back to being a sour puss 24/7 complete with projectile vomiting. Eventually the Zantac didnt work and we switched to another brand with a whole lot of rigamarole with insurance and pharmacies etc. but you dont need that advice just yet ;)

I hope it helps your girl. It made a HUGE difference for our sanity and of course for her daily welfare. I really tried to avoid medication for anyone at any age, but the Zantac was sooooo worth it!

  • my son was on zantac for the first few months. he would never take it from the syringe so i ended up giving it to him through a nipple. i'd put the nipple in his mouth and squeeze the syringe into the nipple and he'd suck it down that way. i hope that  makes sense.

yeah, i can't take credit. my pedi suggested it. i had wasted to much medicine trying to get him to take it via the syringe once i discovered this way i was so happy.

  • I totally lied. I just remembered that dd hated the Zantac until I tried the alternative dissolvable strawberry flavored tablet that is also comes in. She took half a tablet so I needed a pill cutter but beyond that I just stuck it in her mouth and in seconds it dissolved and she didn't mind it. Maybe ask your pedi for a script for the tablet instead?
