Amity, I need some help

PLEASE!!!!  I'm finally starting to receive some applications for our student worker position.  This is the first time I've been in the hiring position.  I've got the basics figured out in reviewing the applications such as availability, prior experience, and completeness of the application.  Yes the application being complete matters to me.  :)   But I think I might be too critical.

For example, one of today's applicants had a 4.0 in high school, but her cover letter is absolutely terrifyingly bad.  She references "skills we are asking for" such as copying and answering phones - both of which I have not listed.   My horrible english teacher side of me wants to highlight and correct her resume and cover letter.  Do I go ahead an interview her taking her poor resume skills with a grain of salt as she's only 18?

  • Well it depends on what skill set you are looking for. What does a student worker do? I try not to read too much into cover letters. While people should pay attention to those types of details its not a deal breaker for me. I know jobs are hard to find and some people apply to many many jobs.

If she needs to be able to write correctly as part of the job then I would move on to the next applicant.

  • Our student worker visits cardholders on campus to review their records.  It's a very detail-oriented position.  When they return to our office they are in charge of typing up paperwork to notify the cardholder if there were any violations.  I have the final review of the paperwork before I send it, but I don't want to be correcting every single one.  So yeah, writing correctly is pretty important.

  • If it was me I would pass on that applicant. The cover letter clearly demonstrates she is not detail oriented.
