I <3 the new healthcare policy.

I had heard through TB that sometimes insurance companies will cover a breast pump.  I called mine ~2 months ago.  They said they do not cover.  FF to today, I called again because of the new healthcare policy regarding women. They are not only covering the pump, but they will pay out 100%, (bc I've already met my oop max for the year), for any pump + accessories I want up to $500.  And I don't even need a prescription.   I just have to submit the receipt and I will be reimbursed in ~3 weeks.  SO. STOKED!!!!!!!

Re: I <3 the new healthcare policy.

  • Yes

There are several things in the new health care policy that I give the thumbs up too.

  • That is great!  I couldn't get a pump covered with my Canadian health care even.  But I think maybe if I had a prescription.

I think it is so great that it encourages BF especially for working moms.  Woohoo to saving money!

  • That's great news. And you just reminded me that I forgot to finish signing up for insurance. Open enrollment ended yesterday. @&$$/$/$/&/+]^]^] gah!!

They will automatically keep me enrolled in what I had last year but I was going to do the HSA for our baby. You can use the money for child care and I thought that would be nice to have. And I was going to try to sign up for short term disability. I did t know I had to have it to get paid for maternity leave and I didn't know I would be getting pregnant,..there is a BIG chance they would have denied me but I still wanted to try. Crap.

Sorry...wasn't trying to hijack your post, you just reminded me what an air brain I've been lately.

Back to your topic lol, when going through my insurance info I found out that they will pay for a breast pump rental  at 100% if I have a perscription. That made me really happy too. I'll have to see if this new law changed that at all.

    Lena,

Once the baby is born you'll have 30 days to change your insurance and set up a flexible spending account for the baby. A new baby is considered a material family change which reopens enrollment.

Once the baby is born you cannot change your personal policy.  You do have 30 days to add the baby, but you can't change the policy/plan that is in your name.  I don't think you can start an HSA for childcare costs at that time either, but that is an IRS thing.  Your states Dept. of Labor might know the answer to that though.

If you are wanting to change the plan you are on I would talk with your HR dept and see if they will let you change.  Chances are they won't, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Most short term disability policies will not cover pre-existing conditions, so you would have had to sign up for it prior to getting pregnant.  I looked into it before we started trying and that's what I was told by several insurance companies.  So none of your maternity leave will be paid?  Do you have any vacation or sick time saved?  How much time were you planning on taking off?

You should be able to change anything that is affected by the baby. We were permitted to start a flexible spending account and set up short term disability insurance for my husband at his work (in addition to adding the baby to my health plan). Certainly a flexible spending account for daycare is related to the baby enough to be added after the baby is born in that 30 day window.

It all depends on your employer.  It sounds like you were very lucky because that is not the norm.

  • Typically you cannot change your hsa/fsa, but you can add in a dependent care account for child related expenses if it is offered by your employer. A dependent care account is strictly for child care when both parents are working or actively looking for work, it's a use it or lose it scenario. You cannot sign up for a dependent care act until you have a dependent
