I need help with Birthday ideas

My dads Birthday is coming up.  He is retired..has ZERO hobbies. He is kind of a simple, no nonsense kind of a guy.  He is really bored at home..so I try to find an putting for him.  For instance, for Fathers Day I told him that I would take him out for Brunch and then to see the Traveling Vietnam wall memorial.  He enjoyed that.  I also took him to go see the Civil War exhibit and he enjoyed that as well.  Any suggestions or ideas? I can always make him a gift certificate for an upcoming event, so if the event is two months from now, it doesn't matter.

Re: I need help with Birthday ideas

  • Stupid spell check...it should say, I try to find an OUTTING for him.
  • This isn't going to help with the birthday gift suggestions, but does he live near you?  If so, maybe the 2 of you could volunteer someplace once a month?  Time together, gets dad out of the house, good works...  I dunno.

Time together gifts: golfing, concerts, sporting... I went to GRNow's calendar for ideas to suggest, but I don't know your dad.  Sorry.

  • Sounds like he might be up for anything as long as he gets out of the house. Am I right?

Does he like space? Kissing Rock is open twice this month to the public.

    What about a Whitecaps game?

    Music at Meijer Gardens?

Does he cook? Maybe you could both take a cooking class.

  • Grand Rapids Public Museum has an exhibit called Game On.

The Ford Museum has an exhibit on quilts right now, so I couldn't suggest that.

Like  a PP suggested, the Tuesday night concerts at the Gardens are nice. You could go to dinner before.

    A Griffins or Whitecaps game.

What is the GRNows calendar website?  I have never checked that out before. Hmmm. Might be on to something! Thanks for all suggestions!

  • go to grnow.com and the calendar is on the right side of the web page.
  • Thank you for all of your suggestions. I know he loves watching my nephew play football.  So, I ended up buying him a nice fall/spring jacket in the school colors. I think he will like it.  My brother thinks it is a great idea, and of course my nephew thinks it is awesome that Grandpa is in the spirit and showing his Panther pride. :0)
