More baby questions--thoughts on using Chiro to flip breech baby

Anyone have compelling opinions on the use of chiropractors to flip a breech baby? Ive never known anyone personally that did this, but Ive heard of this being done successfully all over TheBump boards and other forums and articles.

However, my OB advised against it due to the lack of baby monitoring that goes on during the "procedure". He was much more pro-external version. I cant tell if he's just anti-chiro in general or if his concerns should be taken seriously.

I REALLY dont want a csection so Im needlessly fretting over this breech baby situation even though I know, logically, that I have over a month for this girl to flip on her own.

Thoughts on chrios while pregnant?

Re: More baby questions--thoughts on using Chiro to flip breech baby

  • I used a chiro during my pregnancy and she decreased my pain significantly, it hurt to walk to sit, to lie down everything. I am a big fan. She also helped when Brooks was first born and he was having a lot of gas from feedings, I would take him to get adjusted and he did really well for 2 weeks and then I would notice a difference.

I have several friends who have used chiros for breech babies, but no personal experience. I do think Chiros get a bad rap from ambulance chasing ones, but I feel that they have an important role in my care. I have also argued with my personal physician about chiro care, and then switched doctors. But my mid-wives strongly recommended a chiro during pregnancy.

Did you like how disjointed this was?

  • I appreciate the thoughts. I know theres a love-hate relationship with chiros among medical professionals so Im trying to make my own decision rather than blindly following my OB, but at the same time, he's so convincing!

I might look for a chiro that specializes in pregnancy, or has a special certification or something....they exist right?!  hahah.

  • yup I saw Brandie Nemchenko at KOP family Wellness, she has a special pre-natal and baby sub practice called Bloom. The other thing about her specifically is that I could get a pre-natal massage for like $40, and I didn't have to wait crazy amounts of time, and in the beginning I was going 3 days a week. Her nickname is the "crotch fixer".

  • I think I'd try it. But I'm also from the camp of "hippie birth love". I attended a seminar in May where Ina May Gaskins spoke and there were tons of midwives there. Lots of talk was about using chiropractic and yoga techniques to spin babies. A few people mentioned spinningbabies.com.

Not sure where you are but there was a midwife at the conference (in Harrisburg) from Chester county who I met and seemed very knowledgeable about resources in our area. She also works with a Chiropractor. I can forward you her info if you'd like.

  • I went to Brandie Nemchenko in KOP too because C was breech.  I really liked her, got in right away, and thought her prices were good.  She said she has a high success rate, in the 90percent range, for flipping babies (Webster technique), but it didn't work for me, I ended up with a c/s.  When time comes for number 2, I'll go to her sooner to make sure I'm aligned properly from the start.  I tried every crazy thing on spinning babies too - light, ice, inversions, going under water, etc; girl wouldn't budge.

ETA: I would definitely try this before an external version - there is no forcing the baby to move, there is no touching of the baby - the adjustment allows your pelvis to open so the baby has room to turn on its own, so I don't really understand the argument for monitoring, maybe there are some chiros who do more. There is an adjustment to your hip area and some massage like pressure to some muscles in the pelvis.

  • I am breech too at 31 weeks, which is where I was with DS.  He did flip on his own, but this time around I am trying to help the process along, as I am convinced I am carrying a 20 lb baby and he does not have room to move.

definitely try the inversion on spinning babies -- I have been doing it every night for a week or so.  My OB is totally ok with chiro, and my doula said if he doesn't flip on his own, to try a chiro with the Webster technique around 34-35 weeks.  I booked an appointment already just in case.

people have also told me to bounce on the exercise ball -- opens the pelvis and whatnot.

ugh, my 21 year old childless self wants to vomit all over my response to this post.

  • I went to a chiro throughout my pregnancy-OB recommended her. She had a special table that had a big space in the middle so I could lay on my stomach and I loved it.

And if it's not too ....weird for you-I know folks who had success with acupuncture and acupressure.
