Tips for getting your kid to take a bottle

Unlike B who would suck a pencil if you put it in her mouth, L at 8 days old will not suck anything unless it's attached to me and puts out milk.  How did you get stubborn little ones to take a bottle/paci.  DH and I would like to go for dinner on Sunday for our anniversary and I'd like MIL to give her a bottle.  Likewise, I just need a break every once in a while.

Re: Tips for getting your kid to take a bottle

  • Some babies will only take a bottle if mommy is no where around, so L might be more likely to drink if you are out of the house and away. Also, it would be important to make sure that the milk is nice and warm. And it may help to put a few drops on her lips so she knows that there is milk to be had.

If I were you, I would nurse right before you leave for dinner and then be home 2 or 2 1/2 hours later. That way your MIL won't even need to worry about a feeding - although I would leave a bottle for her just in case.

Todd never took any more from the bottle than he absolutely had to. He would drink, but it was a lot less than Heather and he reverse cycled for a lot longer. Some kids just prefer milk from the tap and others don't care. :-)

  • our first dinner out was similar to what Amy described.  nursed, out the door to the olive garden (hahaha) and then right back home. All in under 90 minutes I am sure. It was before I went back to work so she was under 12 weeks.  We didn't offer a bottle until she was a bit older. 6 weeks I believe. and even then I was at the grocery store, K would feed her and if I got home before she was done I was in the other room, as quiet as possible putting away groceries.

Good luck, she will catch on but it may never be the same as it had been with B! They are always finding ways to keep us on our toes!

No truer words have been spoken.  My two boys are as different as night and day - so don't set yourself up for the comparing babies trap.   My life got much less stressful when I stopped thinking 'Well, Noah did this...why isn't Brody?"

  • CONGRATS! I had no idea you had the baby! Can I ask what L stands for? I love B's name so I was curious what L stood for! How is big sister adjusting?

I don't have tips on the bottle but I will agree that my two girls are veerrrry different!

  • Don't be afraid to try different bottles.  There are all sorts of crazy bottles out there that try to mimic bfing.  Breastflow worked for us.

  • Adam never took a paci after we left the hospital. And since he was such a comfort nurser I BEGGED him and tried every kind out there. He wanted nothing to do with any of them.

He didnt want to take the bottle at first and it took a few tries, we were persistant and did it when I knew he was hungry and after we got a little milk into him he took it.

Are you having DH do it instead of you?

Adam was also a little older than 8 days when we started to switch so I could head back to work...You would think it might be easier to inforce on a younger baby...

    Good Luck!

  • Ditto on kids being like night & day. Jackson was fine with a bottle early on and loved loved loved his bink. Michael hated the bink & wanted nothing to do with it & he only grudgingly took a bottle at daycare so that he didn't starve. After I went back to work  I'd eat dinner & then sit on the couch with him cluster feeding from 6-9 until he was about 7 months old.

  • I didn't introduce any artifical nipples to C until 5 weeks.  She was never into them though.  She has never ever used a paci and getting her to take a bottle was hell.  It took us no less than three weeks of trying.  We had lots of advice about mom not being around so I would try to go upstairs, out on the porch or to the store,  DH tried to hold her skin to skin, he wrapped my shirt around the bottle.  It came to a point that I needed to leave the house and he fed her with a syringe.  Finally, I just scrapped all of the advce and gave her the bottle myself.  She took it from me and was fine after that.  She still only ever took a bottle when she absolutely had to though and was more than happy to drop it for a straw sippy early on.

    good luck!

  • Wes refused bottles for entire days when I went back to work. He finally broke down for a latex nipple (the Platex drop in kind). Might be worth a shot!

  • When J was being stubborn, I asked around for suggestions and people suggested various bottles (like the ones that mimic boobs more), latex nipples, warming the nipples, making sure I was out of the house completely, etc.  ultimately, nothing worked until he just decided a bottle wasn't the end of the world again (he took bottles early on and got stubborn later)

ditto times a million.  Jake & Liam are so different in so many ways, that whenever I would find myself getting worried or worked up over something that Liam was doing/not doing that was different than Jake, I had to stop myself immediately and realize that they will not be the same boys.

That being said, the first time we went out without Jake at the strong urging of my parents, (he was around 2 weeks old) I nursed him, then we ran out the door, went to the TGI Fridays that was 10 minutes down the road, then ran back home.   and he was probably at least 6 months old before I could give him a bottle myself...prior to that, he couldn't be aware of the fact that I was even around, or he'd reject it.
