Boy, it's slow in here if I can keep up!! I'll do my part to try and get it moving here!!
Facts: My kiddo is 2. Not potty trained yet, not crawling out of his crib. Sleeps fine most nights and knows he can just call for Mom or Dad if he needs us.
DH has been talking a lot lately about moving DS to a toddler bed out of his crib. I, of course, being the crazy "but that's all I have left of my baby-baby" mommy, am not ready yet! Also, we are looking at the possibility of having to move again in less than a year. So, here's the poll part:
1) Moms-when did you move your kiddo from crib to toddler bed? Or when do you plan to if they are not yet that old?
2) Do you think it's important to go to toddler bed, or just straight to twin?
3) Would you move now, or wait until move? Or even after move?
4) Redecorating- Would you go all out on something "kiddish" or just do solids/stripes/patterns with versatile colors and fun accents?
Re: WWYD?
If you do switch his bed, I would do it before the move. My thinking is that the move itself would be a big enough change, why add another transition (like switching his bed) at the same time? I'd prefer to have him adjusted prior to moving.
I wouldn't do "kiddish" decor in his room, but G's nursery wasn't/isn't babyish either--I much prefer a room that can grow with the child instead of one that has to be redecorated every couple of years because he's outgrown it.
Cooper switched around his 3rd birthday. He wasn't trying to crawl out of his crib at that point, but Chase was moving into his own room (out of our room) and needed the crib. It was time to move Cooper either way though, he was big enough to understand a "big boy" bed and to stay in it when we told him to.
It was an easy transition because we got Cooper a buzz lightyear bed. He thought that was SO COOL. IDK what it would have been like with a normal twin bed, but the fact the he loved it so much made the transition really easy.
His room is totally kiddish. He has almost no furniture and a his buzz bed and train table. I'm ok with that for now
He's a kid, he can have a kid room.
I would keep him where he is comfortable until after the move. If he's not trying to crawl out, what's the harm in keeping him in the crib?
1) Moms-when did you move your kiddo from crib to toddler bed? Or when do you plan to if they are not yet that old? We moved B when he started to try to climb out of his crib...which was at almost 3 years.
2) Do you think it's important to go to toddler bed, or just straight to twin? I don't think a toddler bed is necessary, but if you think it will make the transition easier...why not? They're inexpensive and you can always use it for the next kid if you want to. B went straight to a queen because I didn't want to mess with a toddler bed. (most nights, he still sleeps with H. They like it, it works).
3) Would you move now, or wait until move? Or even after move? I'd wait until after the move, unless he starts trying to climb out. If he tries to climb out, it becomes a safety issue. If he isn't climbing out, don't move him!
4) Redecorating- Would you go all out on something "kiddish" or just do solids/stripes/patterns with versatile colors and fun accents? We did something B can have for a while. He's got a chocolate brown/cream/burgundy football themed room. It's really not too theme-y, though...black queen bed, black/burgundy/gold dresser, big black open top toy box. It's pretty adult looking, but we still have some kiddish elements to keep it fun.
I think it was somewhere between 2 and 2 1/2, but I would recommend waiting as long as humanly possible. Don't fix what isn't broke. In my experience, it won't be a factor in potty training because most boys won't be consistently dry all night at 2 anyhow.
I would go straight to a twin because toddler bed / crib mattresses suck. Connor definitely preferred a softer bed and would even get up at night and go to the couch. Once I bought him a twin bed with a softer mattress he stayed in his bed all night.
I wod decorate with stripes, solids, or neutrals for now. You'll know pretty sion what he wants his room to be decorated in and it's much easier to do that with a few accessories than have to redo bedding and such. (we're all about spiderman and superheroes these days).
We put M in a toddler bed at around 2 only because she kept trying to get out of her crib. If he is content on being in his crib I would leave him. Trying to get a toddler to stay in a bed with bars around it is just a PITA.
We decorated M's big girl room in colors that can grow with her. It's pink and gray right now. But if he has a certain thing that he loves I don't see anything wrong with doing that. I'm sure his tastes will change a lot when he gets older.
