ladies who have cleaning service/person

My aunt's friend does housecleaning part time and I am considering hiring her to come a few times after the baby is born.  My aunt uses her and says she's great.  She charges hourly and is very flexible.

My question is - what do your cleaning people do when they come every other week?  I have 2400 sq ft, 2.5 bathrooms, 4 bedrooms, and all hardwoods downstairs (carpet on steps and upstairs).

Do you provide a list each visit of things you want them to do?  Or do they have a list that they cover each visit?

Re: ladies who have cleaning service/person

  • We are pretty much house twins.

I've had 3 different services/people over the past few months. If yours is great, keep her. I've found that if you want something done right the old adage is true...but if you just want someone else to clean the major stuff, it's better than nothing.

I've provided a list. Honestly, none of them have looked at it. And if they looked at it, they still didn't do stuff on it.

  • Another house twin here.. I have someone who I paid to come while I was pregnant a few times and we plan to keep now maybe once every few weeks.   She tends to spend most of her time in the kitchen & bathrooms, and then in the bedrooms she will mainly just dust/vacuum.   I have her skip a spare room that we have filled with junk, but pretty much do everything else and it tends to take her 3-4 hours.  I don't give her a list.
  • I don't have a list.  They do the basics every time and if I need something a little extra, I'll leave a note. If it is a big extra, I'll leave a note and pay a little extra.

Every time: dust, vacuum floors and furniture, make beds (change sheets if I leave them out), clean bathrooms (shower, toilet, sinks, mirrors, mop floor), kitchen (sink, counters, microwave, top of stove, outside of fridge, outside of dishwasher, mop floor), take out all trash.  There could be other basics I'm forgetting right now, but you get the jist.

Extras: baseboards, inside the fridge or oven, windows (give more $ for this one), wiping outside of cabinets. They have done the inside of my fridge before without me asking.

  • We just started using a service, so they have only come once so far for the initial major clean. They did so much more than I would've even thought about for a list! The cleaned every single thing from the ceilings to the floor, even moving rugs and furniture, taking down light fixtures to clean them, etc.

They do provide a list on their website, so you could pick what you want from that:  http://www.mydbcleaning.com/service.html

  • (From that link, scroll down to see the list, and then choose the room)

  • I've used a servce in the past and they had their own list they used.  But now have one woman who comes for 12 hrs/week.  She knows what I need done and she usually has time to spare.  She folds laundry and puts it away, picks up all rooms throughout the home, cleans floors, kitchen, and baths.
