Teachers

I know we have a few teachers on here. I got the full time job! I will be teaching 4 or 5 classes where I will be only teaching small group lessons twice a week and they do computer lessons the other days.  There is no homework in this class, and the quizzes are all computer based.  Are there any classroom supplies I should consider when I go shopping? I know I want them to keep their notebooks in the classroom (since there's no homework, I don't want them "forgetting" to bring it to class) so I was thinking maybe milk crates since I will have 6 or 7 class sets of notebooks.  Since I spent the last two years subbing I need to go shopping so I figured I'd see if you have any really fun or cool supplies that I should consider.

Re: Teachers

  • Oh, and the small group lessons will be on math and language arts concepts!

  • Great news, congrats!  What grade(s) will you be teaching?

I would definitely want them have a place to put all of there work.  If it is both LA and math, maybe you want to get a 2 subject notebook.  You could also do 1 inch binders with dividers, although notebooks is probably easier.

Depending on the size of the groups, you could put stuff in milk crates or possibly in magazine files or large plastic baskets.

You might want folders if there are worksheets that are part of the program.

What about caddies or a plastic storage chest with drawers to put supplies in like pencils, highlighters, pens, etc.

If I think of more, I will get back to you!

  • well, the supply lists already went out, and it told students they need a one or two subject notebook as well as a 1 in binder, so they should have both.

Class sizes are 15 students for 4 or 5 classes (forgot how many I'd have) and then the remaining two classes meet every other day and have a max class size of 28, though I was told at the interview that they would try to keep it around 18 students.  All 8th grade.

Ooh, I saw caddies at Target near the dollar section yesterday. I'll have to see if they have any left tomorrow. I'll be able to see the classroom tomorrow morning. I'm also planning on using solid colored fabric instead of paper for the bulletin boards. That way I can use it for the entire semester.

  • For Bulletin boards, I learned the coolest trick at my last placement... use the dollar store or Party city plastic throw away table clothes. They're either $1 or less than $2, come in such a wide variety of colors and they can be changed for different topics, seasons etc. Congratulations and good luck with your new position.

  • Yay! Congrats!

Fabric is great for bulletin boards that you don't want to change. The BB backgrounds in my classroom pretty much stay the same throughout the year. I've had the same fabric on my boards for 3 years and it isn't faded.

Target has greats bins for collected papers. You might want separate bins for your different classes? I honestly have no idea how middle and high school teachers organize. I'm guessing you'll also need a lot of binder clips.

    Good luck!

  • I don't know if you will have a lot of papers that you will need to organize.  I use this cart.  They also make a single column one.  This one is from amazon.  I have seen them at Michael's and even Lowe's or Home Depot during back to school time.  It is a little pricey, but so worth the organization to me!

I have one drawer for each class period/group I work with on one side.  On the other side, I keep any handouts that I have for the classes.  This is where I store work that needs to be graded or handed back.  I keep file folders with the period number in the matching drawer so when I collect work I can easily store it to grade.

This year I plan to get a couple of baskets or paper stackers to put on top.  I want a place to have the day's handouts.  I found that sometimes my handouts were on my desk, other times a table, other times a counter.  I want one designated place.

  • My plan was originally to get on one of the single column carts like that, but I think it would have worked better if I was teaching a traditional class like I did last semester. The students will only be turning in one sheet of paper of week- their log of computer modules completed/reflection on the week. So I'm not sure a cart like this will be utilized as much since I really won't be grading (they don't receive a grade for this course, but it is mandated if their scores were low enough. They can switch from my course to an elective if they're regular math class and/or english class grades are high enough and they show improvement on the trimester test (the test shows college readiness and is given 3 times a year).

  • Ok. So there's no bulletin boards, so I'll have to make my own on the cinderblock walls.  So I'm thinking the fabric/table cloth background is out. I'll have to tape paper to a paper background or use sticky tack.

    None?  Wow.

Is there an extra chalkboard that you could use as a bulletin board?

You could get bulletin board strips (don't know what they cost) to hang stuff from.

Must you have bulletin boards?  What about hanging posters and charts?

Get twine and clothespins.  String the twine from the ceiling and hang things using clothespins.

  • Congrats on your job!!!  How exciting for you.  Do you have anything magnetic?  I love using magnetic clips to attach important papers near my desk or laminated sheets I use often so I can just grab and go.
