I could really use an education on what the good school districts are in the county. Also which ones to avoid at all costs. I know there is a post below relating to a similar subject...but I'm completly in the dark.
I'm not from the area. DH and I both graduated from schools within the Penncrest school district in Crawford County. DH works downtown and we are looking to buy a home...or land if we can't find a home that we feel at home in. DS1 is nearly 3 and we absolutly want to be settled in a great school district within the next 2 years.
I would appreciate any information you ladies could give pertaining to school districts and their reputations and advantages. Information that could help us in our search for a home...or land, whichever ends up being the better option.
Re: Allegheny County School Districts?
I always use www.greatschools.net when looking at school districts.
This map could help too deterimine where the districts are in relationship to downtown.

There are great schools in all areas. I think first you need to decide it you want to be North, South, East or West of the city. I grew up in the North,so I am partial but the South Hills, East and West have a lot of great options also. What is the maximum commute your DH wants, will you need access to public transportation, is walkability a concern?
The Pittsburgh Business Times has rankings, too.
