I am astounded as to how much childcare costs- not necessarily structured facilities, but in general. At home day cares run roughly $150-160/ week, average centers, (not super fancy ones,) between $200-250. This seems like a lot of money monthly, but hourly, it's not bad, so whatever. We only need childcare 2 full days/week, plus a few extra hours a week, depending on scheduling. (My job is fairly flexible, so DH and I are trying to alternate.) I figured if day cares in homes cost $150-ish or $30/day, PT care would be roughly half of that.
So I posted an ad on Craigslist seeking PT care. I was looking for maybe a SAHM or something, because otherwise the hours can be rather inflexible. Up until this point, I was thinking I would pay around $80-100/ week for the two days. No. I got responses from "nannies" looking for $15/hr!!!!! These kids are just college students! When I was babysitting in school, I made $5-6/ hr for 3 kids! If I knew that was the going rate for a sitter around here, I would have jumped ship at my job a long time ago. What the hell!?!
ETA: The $5-6/ hr was my most lucrative gig. The rest of the time I made ~$3-4.
Re: OMFG Childcare Vent
VT is expensive. I was making $10/hour over 10 years ago.
Have you asked about part time at centers/in home? A center may be open to if there's another parent looking for part time as well. What about a nanny share?
Fwiw, we pay $13/hr for preschool, $10/hour+tip for a 16 year old to hang out while the kids sleep at night.
We were lucky that we found a day home for $25 a day. That was significantly cheaper than most of the others we looked at that were anywhere from $35 to $42 per day.
I have a few friends who work casual, or part time and they have had a really tough time finding child care. Most structured places dont want to fill one of their spots with a kid who wont be paying them for full time attendance.
Good luck with the search. I know it's super frustrating.
Daycare here is 22 bucks a day. I know that its super cheap here, but our cost of living is lower.
I pay my babysitters 7-10 bucks an hour. We pay them more because then they make themselves more available to us which is nice.
This. I pay 700 a month for in home day care for Katie and that's ony bc it's a family friend. I would be paying $1000 or more if I looked elsewhere.
I pay $500 a month for Maggie and that is only for 2 days a week. It is about $60 a day here and that is on the cheaper end of the scale.
I hope you are able to find something reasonable soon!!
This makes me so nervous about finding a job and then daycare next year. I hope I can find something that pays enough to cover daycare!
Good luck!
I pay $2.75 an hour for Eli's daycare. But childcare in our area is really cheap. I think because we are a pretty small town near just about nothing. Our cost of living is also low here.
However, I was a nanny just out of college for 2 years and was making $15/hour the first year and $17/hour the second year.
