Could you talk me into (or out of :) ziplining?

Hi ladies,

DH and I are leaving for Costa Rica in pretty soon, and many of our activities have been booked. The one I'm still thinking about is the canopy tour (ziplining) in Monteverde Cloud Forest. It's supposed to be thrilling and spectacular... I just don't do thrilling so well. I never ride rollercoasters - hate that sudden stomach drop - and I'm not sure how I feel about heights and speed... DH really wants to do it - should I let him go alone or "face my fears"? Please talk to me, especially if you used to be afraid of ziplining and then loved it! TIA :)

Re: Could you talk me into (or out of :) ziplining?

  • ziplines aren't like roller coasters-there's no sudden drops. it's more like gliding along smoothly through the air. you dont really go all that fast compared to roller coasters etc...I mean you dont go slow but it's not a 60 mph thing either. my DH isn't a fan of heights at all and he had a great time doing that in mexico.

    do it :)

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • Definitely do it! Nothing like roller coasters at all, it is so much FUN!
  • I was kind of nervous before ziplining in Roatan last year because I'm not a huge fan of heights unless I'm really strapped into a solid coaster or behind a big railing or thick pain of glass.  Ya know what?  Ziplining was great and I'd do it again in a heart beat.  There is a certain thrill to it, but unless you've got an insane fear of heights, you will be just fine.  The ride is pretty smooth, and the worst part for me was the leg straps sometimes digging in a little bit when my shorts rose up.  Wear comfy clothes and sneakers and trust that you will have funBig Smile

  • I'm kind of an adventure junkie so take whatever I say with that in mind -

    DO IT!

There are no drops like roller coasters.  It's a smooth ride and you can really enjoy the view of the canopy way up there.  Plus, wouldn't it be really fun to do it with your DH?

  • I don't like heights, but always end up doing things involving heights on vacations for some reason :)

We went ziplining in Mexico in May and it was sooooo much fun!! I will admit the first time I stepped off the platform to go down the line, my stomach sank a little and I got a tad nervous just because I had to trust that the harness will hold me. But once I got past that first line, it was nothing!

    I definitely say do it!

  • I am almost the same as you. I absolutely can not do Roller Coasters. We went Zip Lining in Mexico and it was absolutely amazing. The highlite of our trip. So you NEED to do it! Haha. It will be awesome and you will love it.

Nothing like Roller Coasters/Falling/Heights/Adrenaline. It is pretty tame.

  • Thanks for you input, everyone, I think you have convinced me - ziplining is looking more and more attractive by the minute! :) See if I don't book that tour tonight ;)

  • If you're every going to do it, do it in Monteverde. It's spectacular.

  • I also dislike roller coasters/heights/the drop in the stomach crap - Hate it.  I ziplined in Belize a few years ago and LOVED it. I will say - the first line was the hardest - there IS a bit of a drop at first - just the line adjusting to your weight and that freaked me the f out. Not to mention the heights.  When I got to the second line, I was bawling, begging them to let me get down, DH had no idea what to do. The guy said "You would have a lot more fun if you would open your eyes" and off I went on the second line.  And sure enough, he was right. OPEN YOUR EYES. It is absolutely amazing. We are ziplining in Costa Rica this fall, I can't wait!

    (also, do not look down)

  • I am TERRIFIED of heights. Hate them, hate flying, won't go on rollercoasters, I even get nervous going over high bridges. I literally freak out. I went to Hawaii with my husband, then fiance and his family a few years ago and I made myself go ziplining with them because I didn't want to miss out on this possibly once in a lifetime experience. I LOVED IT! I had a blast and it wasn't near as bad as I thought it would be. No sudden drops and you feel safe and secure. I would do it again, anytime. In fact, I even searched for nearby ziplining places when my husband and I went on our honeymoon. I highly recommend it! You won't regret it! I think you would only regret not doing it, honestly. Go for it! Big Smile
  • definitely do it!

my parents did it a few months ago, and they are 67...they loved it!!!

we are planning a costa rica trip too in a few months for my dh's bday, will have to get some tips from you.

    have a ball!!
