Hello,
DH and I are going to be in London for the last week of September and we would like to get in a few day trips while we're there and I was wondering if there were any good recommendations. I have a few ideas such as going to either Cambridge or Oxford to see the colleges one day, and possibly Dover another day. My husband really wants to see the cliffs of Dover but I heard that, even though the cliffs are beautiful, it may not be worth it because there's not much else to do around there. Also, do you think Bath would be too far to travel for a day trip? We're not against renting a car if we need to but if there's public transport we'll probably opt for that first.
Any advice or recommendations would be welcome. Thanks so much!
Re: Day Trips from London
Dover. If you leave in the am, get there, walk to the cliffs and then visit the hidden WWII tunnels inside them, eat lunch and travel abck to the city - you have a full day.
The cliffs are great and the tunnels are very, very interesting.
Bath is a great place. Flights are so cheap in Europe check out easy jet ETC
a day trip to paris/ dublin/ barcelona is possible. When we lived in London we picked up a flight to Rome for $8
There is a castle over by the cliffs of Dover you could visit - or pair it up with spending part of the day in Canterbury. Canterbury is a nice town to walk around..cars have to park out the outside of the city and then take a bus in - so there aren't any cars in the areas you walk around, which is very nice.
I'd also day trip it to Stonehenge. That's definitely worth a visit.
One of my favorite things we did when in England was visit the Cotswolds. This may be a bit too far for a day trip, but close enough if you left the city and did an overnight there.
We drove out to the Cotwolds, spent two nights, then on our way back into the City we hit Bath and Stonehenge.
When I was in London, I did day trips to Windsor and Greenwich.
I also visited Bath and the Cotswolds (both of which I loved) but did not see them via a day trip from London, although I imagine you could!
I don't think I have ever seen anyone recommend Camden; a northwest suburb of London. I loved it there (ok, so I'm an old hippie). The street markets are great fun and it is an easy jaunt via the Tube
L'isle Sur la Sorgue, Provence
I LOVE windsor - cute town & the castle tour is fab!!!
leeds castle is a great day trip too - so so pretty
