Fiji v. Bora Bora

We're choosing a honeymoon location and having a little trouble. I'd love any input from you ladies/

Bora Bora pros: romantic lagoons, overwater bungalows, shark and ray feeding, hiking, breakfast brought to you on a canoe.

Fiji pros: swimming with dolphins, kayaking, cave exploring, rain forest hikes, glass bottom boats, traditional kava ceremonies.

Re: Fiji v. Bora Bora

  • I haven't been to either but I'd go with Bora Bora, I dream about it all.the.time, lol! Fiji would be awesome as well, but you can't beat what Bora Bora has to offer and it's the PERFECT honeymoon/romantic destination if you can afford it (in my opinion). I mean come on...o/w bungalows...breakfast by canoe...oh my!

  • I really liked the pros you listed for Fiji...really makes me want to explore the possibility of going there sometime soon...  =)

Now, I have been to Bora Bora--my husband and I went to Moorea and Bora Bora for our honeymoon back in 2008. It was 4/3 nights. When I was looking to book the trip to Tahiti though, so many travel agents kept telling me how I should consider Fiji as it is a much better value for your money. I took that as, well since this is the ultimate reason (honeymoon) to get my husband to splurge on a vacay, we still went with Bora Bora. And yes, it was spectacular! I think either place can make for a wonderful honeymoon. But being able to take advantage of the expensive trip for our special trip was what helped me make the choice... :)

  • We went to Fiji and it was nice but it is not as luxurious as BB in general.  The outer islands are more picturesque.  Didn't know about the dolphins.  We snorkeled alot and it was fantastic.  Cave, kayak, etc was not that different than other locations.  The kava was fun and we did alot of these.  Fair warning...it tastes like dirt.  No funny side effects.  And we brought some home. Don't stay in Nadi, Suva, or Denaru (dirty, bleh).  There are also several great AI resort islands.

We visited 3 islands and stayed in 5 places so it was pretty adventurous overall.

  • We just returned from BB and absolutely *loved* it.  We have never been to FIJI but I have heard from those that have been both places that the food in BB is much better.

And the food in BB is spectacular which is something that was important to us.

  • haven't been to Fiji, but went to Tahiti for 10 days for HM and it was amazing.  You really can't go wrong with either I imagine.  It's exactly the kind of trip you splurge on for your HM and it's harder to justify at other times.

We stayed on Bora Bora and Taha'a (and one night on Tahiti).  Amazing.

  • I'm a little late, but just got back from my DW/HM. I've been to both- Tahiti 5 times, Fiji 1 time (but several islands.) It really depends on what type of honeymoon you want. You listed out the pros and cons and as you can see- totally different! You don't necessarily have to be active in Fiji, but you listed a lot of active things. You can be very active in Tahiti as well, depending on what islands you choose. Tahiti is WAY more than just Bora Bora. As others mentioned, budget will play a role too. Some of my pros and cons:

Fiji: the option to stay on more of a private island resort, smaller resorts (many with only 13 bures!), incredibly friendly people, more resorts that are considered all inclusive (only a few actually include drinks, though.)

Tahiti: A bit easier to island hop (IMO), more choices for oppulent luxury, gorgeous water colors, shorter flight on a better airline

I recommend visiting tahiti-tourisme.com and fijime.com to learn more about the islands. Then, contact a travel agent and have them price both options for the same amount of time for hotels in the same class (4 star, 5 star, etc). You may or may not see a stark contrast in pricing, but it may help you narrow things down. Also, as I said above, definitely decide what you want to get out of your honeymoon.

  • Honestly, you can't compare the two.

    BB is spectacularly beautiful.

I have been to quite a few tropical islands in my time and BB is by far my favourite. The water is the most exquisite shade of turquoise, the snorkelling is incredible, the motu picnics that you can have with your feet dangling in the water, the variety of great restaurants is also appealing. The people are so lovely and caring.

In every sense of the word, BB is a tropical paradise.
