We have been searching for a home for the last 9 months (seriously looking for the last 6). There isn't a whole lot on the market in the area, and because of DH job we are limited on the location on the house.
Anyways, a house went on the market in the middle of May. We looked at it immediately. It is on 10 acres, the outside is just amazing! Beautiful patio and deck, the lawn is fantastic, and I just love the outside. That's where it ends though. While the inside isn't bad, it is dated (which is fine), taking wallpaper down, and changing out fixtures is easy. But the house is set up so STUPID. There really is only 2 bedrooms, although they say there is three (the third doesn't have a closet and the other room that they might be considering a br doesn't have a window). There is no normal sized bathtub in the house. But the worst thing is, that there are these high powered transmission lines, if you are unaware of what these are:

They are about 75-150 feet tall depending on the landscape, and there is one every 600 feet...
Right now the power company owns this house. The lines haven't been put in yet, but they should be going in very soon. They don't even know if any will be on the land but they will definitely be running over it. As in not over the house but across a corner of the 10 acres which includes the driveway. We probably would not be able to see these from the house, except for in the winter, and when driving in and out of the driveway. Anyways I'm concerned that this will be a VERY hard house to sell if we had to sell it in the near future - unless we did A LOT of updating to make the house more spectacular.
So they were listed very high, our realtor thought so too, so we put an offer in Memorial day weekend $90,000 less than asking price. Well they finally got back to us today, and they dropped their price $37,000. Which is extremely good.... But I feel like still at the price it would be overpaying because of the amount of work that needs to be done to the inside, and because of these power lines. And it's really hard to get any comps because of this.... I've talked to our realtor and she doesn't really say anything besides the fact that she can't find anything that is comparable.... H says we will raise our offer $5,000.
I guess I'm just torn, needing some encouragement. I'm getting sick of living in an apartment, but don't want to make a bad decision... Thanks for letting me vent.
CN: Looking for houses, found one in May, but will have transmission lines running over the property. The inside of the house is old and dated. But outside besides the power lines is fantastic... Feel like they are overpriced, finally heard a counter offer from them today on our offer that we submitted memorial weekend... Feeling a little sad and not sure what to do...
Re: High Powered Transmission lines, long with CN
I Bought a house that's about 500 ft from major line. I'm on a private road and have to drive under them everyday, but I don't see them from my house save for the peaks in the winter. I also got the house at a bargain basement price and put a bunch of money into fixing it up. We hemmed and hawed about the power lines, but ultimately decided we loved the property and house too much to let that overshadow it. I can't speak to retail price, but It is an issue.
The question we asked ourself was could we find all the things this house had that we wanted somewhere else for a comparable price. After 25 houses, the answer was no, and we bought (we were looking for some specific features which are really hard to find). If your not 100% sold on the price, then there's your answer.
