I figured they probably were because by the end of the show, they had decided on and closed on a house. How would they have known starting out that one of the three they chose to show would be "the one" otherwise, KWIM? I also know a realtor who was on House Hunters and she told me a lot of the same stuff that was in that article.
H and I just for fun looked into being on House Hunters since we just purchased a home. It says in the info that you could be in the late stages of closing on the house and be on the show. We didn't try for it because they want to film scenes at your current place and our apartment was already in boxes.
I still like watching it because I like looking at other people's houses
I agree with PP. I don't watch it for the drama (or suspense)...I watch it to look at the houses, so being staged doesnt really bug me.
It is staged, but I don't know that I would call it fake, from what I have read you still have to be a recent homebuyer, and you still have to look at houses that were in your pricerange/desires.
