Advice on buying a used car

Would you buy one that had been in an accident?  Or if it had 3 different owners (the car is a 2004 - so almost 9 years old)?

Re: Advice on buying a used car

  • Accident would be fine as long as the repairs had been done in the proper way. As for owners, my car had 2 owners before me but it was a certified pre-owned car so I felt comfortable with that extra assurance of the short warranty, etc. I guess what you want to know is mileage, etc. I traded in a 2yo car once with only 10K miles on it, it could have easily ended up with 2-3 owners and still have been a great car....

  • I would consider a car that had been in an accident, if the accident wasn't severe. If any of the airbags had deployed, it would be a no-go for me. I would trust a fender repair, but I would not trust that airbags were fixed properly and would deploy again in the event of another crash. (I have no idea if you have access to this info via carfax or not... I guess if I didn't know if it was a bad accident or not, I would pass.)

3 owners in 9 years would not phase me. Lots of times, first owners were a 2 year lease. Upgrading cars every few years isn't unheard of, either. I guess if it was 1 owner for 7 years, then it got sold in rapid succession at the end you might know it has troubles... but it isn't a red flag to me.

Out of curiosity, what are you looking to buy? We bought a 2010 Nissan Rogue in May. Love it so far.

  • Okay.  Thanks, ladies.  You're making me feel much better about the car.  It's a Toyota Corolla, Amy.  The first owner leased it for almost 3 years (had very low mileage when they finished up).  The second owner had it for 2 years and averaged 34k miles/year (ouch).  The third owner had it for about 2 years and averaged 12k miles/year.  It sounds like owner #2 rear-ended someone, because the repairs were to the headlight assembly and hood.

    Total mileage is about 120k.

The other thing is that the car went to auction after the 2nd & 3rd owners; looks like the dealerships couldn't sell it.  That makes me wonder why.  It seems like a decent car though, and it rides nice.

  • Assuming you're getting a good deal considering it has 120k miles, it sounds good to me!

We sold my old car privately, but asked about trade in value and the would only give us $2k less than blue book trade value. They said it had too many miles - 2007 with 60k miles - and it would be hard for them to sell. They told me straight out that they'd send it to auction instead of keeping it on the lot.

  • Oh good to know about sending it to auction.  I'm so not up on these things!  I've only owned two cars in my life, and I bought them both new (stupid) - well except for our mini-van which we bought from a dealer that provided the Carfax, plus it only had one other owner.

An update though, another Corolla at the same place just became available. We had been interested in that one as well, but the day before we went to test drive it, someone put down a deposit on it. We're going to check out that one tonight, and if it seems comparable to the other then I'll do another Carfax.. and then it's decision time!  Thanks for your help!!

  • Good luck!!!! Buying cars is so stressful. I really hope (knocking on wood) that I have a few more years before I have to do this again.
