Michelle Obama and Apollo Ohno

Did anybody else catch that clip on the Olympics?  Michelle Obama is playing tug of war (I think) with Apollo Ohno and a couple of the summer Olympic athletes.  And she said something like, "Oh wow! You guys are small but strong!"  She was acting like they all had primordial dwarfism.  As a shortish person (5'4") I take offense!

By the way I checked on Apollo's height and he's 5'8 and the other athletes seemed around the same.

Who the heck does she think she is!?!  I just thought that was so rude.  She was around some of the best athletes in the world and that's what she says to them.

Re: Michelle Obama and Apollo Ohno

  • She's tall, right?  I mean, it was an awkward thing to say, for sure, but maybe she has a few inches on all of them?

  • i would have classified him as "small" as well. not because of height, but because his build isn't overly large. obviously he's good at what he does because of a smaller/leaner build.

i think it was just how you took it, perception wise, to be honest.

Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • She is 5'11".  Same as me.  the average height for a man in the US is 5'10" so in her defense he is 2 inches under average. and she is 7 inches taller than average. And trust me, being tall can be just as uncomfortable feeling as being the short one. I didn't see the spot but I can only assume everyone was ok with what went on. And honestly if Apollo Ohno doesn't care if someone 3 inches taller than he is calls him short I don't think it matters all that much.

That's true, I didn't think of it like that.  I guess that could be how she meant it.  It just seemed like an awkward moment.

  • She's what I would consider to be pretty tall, so maybe there were some height jokes exchanged between them beforehand?  Were the athletes offended by her comment?  I don't really think it's anything more than maybe an awkward comment.  I'm 5'2", so maybe I'm just immune to height comments.

  • And she joked, rather nicely, with Gabby Douglass about her eating McD's after winning her gold medal. Gabby did call it a "splurge" - come on people - everything in moderation! Here is an athlete who probably eats fruits and veggies all day - I wouldn't even joke about the splurge - she deserves it. Hell, I'll buy her her next splurge if she wants! LOL

  • Eh, I'm 5'2 and doesn't offend me. Haven't seen it but I would bet their were some height comments all around since she is tall.
