Advice please!

So when H and I were on the honeymoon, we met a couple on their "Destination Weddingmoon" and we instantly became best couple friends.  Problem is, we live in Ohio, they live in Louisiana.  We promised each other that we would do vacations together.  Well, Labor Day weekend is coming up and our new friends contacted us about going to New Orleans for the long weekend!  I have never been and it is so on my bucket list!  BUT- it's either a $450 each for a plane ticket for H and I, or a 17 hour drive.  We flat out cannot afford $900 so we're looking to drive (about $250 in gas). They have offered to pay for our lodging since they found a Living Social deal for a really nice hotel down there, and I am planning to take them up on that offer, considering it's a two hour drive for them and 17 hours for us :-(

I should mention that I JUST go a new job and I refuse to ask off for work on Friday, so we couldn't leave until 7 pm on Friday and we would both need to be back for work/school Tuesday morning. Is it worth it?  Should we just say "screw it, let's go to NOLA!" or should we step back and say no, since we will be in the car the same amount of time we will be in NOLA?

Re: Advice please!

  • If it were me, I wouldn't do it... Is there some place you guys could meet more in the middle? Memphis? Nashville? Not quite the same as New Orleans, but still fun places :)

I actually made a google maps of where each of us live and I drew a "10 hour drive" radius around both of us.  TN is definitely in the middle, and we had talked about that, too, but our shared radius is kind of in the middle of nowhere.  Plus, NOLA had the living social deal and it was also one of the destinations we really wanted to do together. That's why they chose there.  I just wish we talked about it earlier than 3 weeks before, cuz we can't find any decent plane tickets anymore.

  • What airport were you flying out of? We usually fly out of Cleveland Hopkins but I have heard Akron can be a little cheaper. Also, Expedia sometimes runs living social deals. You should sign up just to see if you can get a good deal.

We do usually fly out of akron cuz it is cheaper.  The $450 quote is out of CAK :-(

Did you check the airlines directly or did you go through a service like Expedia?

Both.  But unless we can get it down to $200 ish per person, it's not going to happen.

  • Personally from someone who lives in Louisiana I say don't do it. NOLA is really not as great as everyone says it is. Bourbon Street smells horrible and personally I don't care for it. But to each their own I should say. I also don't think money wise it would be that fun. You would really only spend a day there so for the time and money it's like you just drove all weekend.
  • Hmmm, I looked on Southwest and flights there are pretty cheap but the flights back aren't so great. I agree with PP and say don't do it but do something with a bit of advance planning later in the year. Good luck!

  • So...if it were us, we wouldn't do it...simply because of all the factors you laid out  1.  new job, therefore no time off, therefore short trip                                            2.  light on cash                                                                                                3.  high airfare (I should say - those fares are typical of where we live)                  4.  short notice

I would say wait until you have a little more time/advance notice that way you all can plan a little easier and not feel like you have to scrape by in order to make this happen.  I bet if you did wait, you all would enjoy the trip a lot more.  Nothing saying if you don't meet this time it's your one and only shot.  With that said...I also know the feeling on wanting to do something so bad too!

GL - hope you figure it out.

  • I'd say go! If you aren't going to break the bank in going (with driving) then do it. It sounds like a fun weekend and you obviously really want to see this couple again. Even if the weekend does turn out sucky, you at least get to check something off your bucket list. I might be a bad influence though but I still say go :)

    I agree with this!

  • I am on a big kick of saying yes to every cool experience right now...one day eventually you have more then money and yourselves now is the time, but I also see the bad side in it...so good luck on whatever you decide. what does H say?
"Anyone can be passionate, but it takes real lovers to be silly"
  • I wouldn't do it.  I'd just explain it to them like you explained it to us - that you definitely still want to go someplace with them, but that the timing isn't right with your new job.  I might look for any last minute deals, but otherwise I'd pass.  It wouldn't be worth the travel hassle/expense to me.

  • I'm glad some of you thought we should do it cuz we ended up just saying "F**k it! Let's go!" it's apparently gay pride weekend there over labor day so there will be an extra dose of fun! H was the one that talked me into it, he wanted to go so bad, we're already talking about how to keep ourselves busy on the 17 hour drive there and back, and H is even planning to get back home an hour before he needs to leave for work on Tuesday! If he's alright with it, then I guess I am!

We're goin to New Orleans, y'all!!

  • awesome!  i'm glad you're going!  :)  hubby and i LOVE road trips, so that would be half the fun for us!  :)  we spent a weekend in NOLA one time while hubby was living in hattiesburg, ms and we had so much fun!  yeah, bourbon street is dirty and stinky, but we went anyway just because we were there.  we found this awesome tequila bar and made friends with the bar tender, there were a lot of great places for breakfast/brunch... actually... lots of good food everywhere.

there was one place we went that sucked, it's this 24 hour coffee & beignet tourist trap place, and it's TERRIBLE.  the coffee tasted like dirt and the beignets were not very good.  it was the only place we went that we didn't like.

i hope you have a blast!!
