what to do with old mattress?
H and I got our new mattress yesterday. Now we have a used, but still in good condition, queen size mattress that we don't need and don't have room to store.
We've asked a couple of people if they need it, and no one does. I was considering posting on FB but for some reason it seems weird to me to ask if anyone wants a used mattress. But maybe I'm over thinking it...?
Should we just toss it next time our trash gets picked up?

yeah, i was going to say Salvation Army will pick it up from your house if you want to donate it to them! plus, it's a tax write-off

Do I remember correctly that you live in Mass? If so you technically can't sell it and Goodwill/Salvation Army might not take it because they can't resell it. Sometimes shelters will take them, animal rescues as well.
If that doesn't work would post on Craigslist and/or Freecycle that you're putting a free mattress outside (just giving a general area - not your address!) and leave it outside with a FREE sign on it. Someone should pick it up.
Yes I do! I've looked into it a bit more after I read your post, and donating it isn't going to work. I guess it would have to be sanitized by me or the ppl selling it after I donate, and most places don't have the $ or time for that.
I think I'm just going to put it out next week with the trash (with a "free" sign on it) and if someone takes it before the trash ppl come, then great, if not then oh well.

If you put it out by the side of the road I am willing to bet someone will take it if they see it's in good condition and it's free. I'd put it out there on a weekend, like Sat or Sunday. When we want to get rid of something, this is what we do. And it's usually gone within a few hours.
I would check with whoever picks up your trash (if it's the city or private trash collector) if they will take it. Sometimes they won't take over sized items like that. If they won't take it and no one else claims it, you may have to take it to the dump and pay a small fee for them to dispose of it.
Unfortunately your trash people might not take it. Mattresses take up so much room in landfills there's often an extra charge for them.
I would definitely try the FREE sign over the weekend or a local animal rescue.
