Toddler extracurricular activities

My son turns 3 in a few months and i was thinking about signing him up for some sort of extracurricular activity.  Something in the city/sq hill or monroeville/forest hills area would be good.  here are some things i have thought of.  does anyone have any particular recommendations or ideas to add?

gymkana is a possibility

maybe dance classes? (he is really into dancing...)

karate

sports???

music classes- seems like something he is already getting at daycare and at home..

Re: Toddler extracurricular activities

  • Eleni started taking Soccer Shots when she turned 3. They offer them at her daycare and is basically a soccer skills class which is really geared towards the younger kids.  No competition or actual games. She really seems to enjoy it and has been doing it for the past year or so... then we started dance classes last year too. No recs for that, we are in the south, but Soccer Shots has park programs and may have one close to you too.
  • Swimming?

We live in a different area so I don't have specific recs. but dd has done a bunch of activities throughout the years.  She has been taking swimming on and off since 7 months. We really wanted her comfortable with the water (and she really is!).

We did gymnastics a few times as toddler and patent class but last year she did her first on her own class. We did soccer in the spring and baseball earlier in the summer (like what Amanda mentioned. Learning skills not competition).  And they have a dance instructor for class that comes to daycare so she did that last year and will this year.

We just want to expose her to different things and see what she enjoys. But I definitely recommend swimming if you haven't done it yet.

We are doing swimming and dance this fall and probably gymnastics in the winter. Those are dd's favorites. She did not like baseball or soccer!

  • Jake did tball last spring and he really enjoyed it.  I'm not sure if the league is in that area or not, but we did it through i9 Sports.  I liked their set up more than others that I came across because it was only on Saturdays, with a 30 minute practice followed immediately by a 30 minute game against another team.  I wasn't ready to commit to midweek practices until I absolutely have to Stick out tongue  at the beginning of each game, they discussed the quality of the week (sportsmanship, motivation, etc...) and a medal was given out after each game to the kid who showed the quality the most.  by the end of the 8 week period, every kid had received a medal and everyone got a trophy.  They do spring and fall leagues.

  • We started dance just before DD turned 3 and we're adding soccer this year. She's only in preschool 3 days a week, so we wanted to get her around other kids, introduce her to structured activity, etc.
  • We take Adrian to Gymkhana. He's only 16 months so we do the Parent-Toddler class but he really enjoys it. It's a nice environment there and he's learning to socialize with kids other than DC classmates.

  • Keefer has been in swim class for a couple years but now that he's 3, we plan to continue swimming but we're also looking into gymnastics and short sports (both are offered at our YMCA for 3 year olds).  Short sports is supposedly an intro to a bunch of different sports, so I thought that would be neat to see what he likes the best and go from there.  We go to the Sewickley Y so obviously not in your area, but maybe there are similar programs you could look into.

  • Jackson is 3. He did soccer shots through daycare in the spring and started gymkhana this summer. He was so-so on soccer, but loves gymnastics. He and his brother are both taking a fall class

  • DD does gymnastics on Saturday mornings.  It's at a regular gymnastics/cheer gym.  I thought the price was more reasonable that the "kid" gyms.

  • we did kindermusik and I know you said you feel he gets that at Daycare.

But with kindermusik gives you Cds with all the songs from class. Instuments to take home and activity books.    my DS doesnt go to daycare so the interaction was something I was interested in, but they also teach them "real music" stuff like fast and slow and high and low and also use other instruments in class.

It is more than just singing along to songs or dancing.
