Europe suggestions?
My husband and I share a desire to travel. Next year, we are considering traveling to Europe. Our concerns: we would probably have to go in the summer, which I know is a bit more pricey (we would like to spend somewhere in the $4000 range for airfare + accommodations, for a trip less than 2 weeks); unknown/hard-to-predict costs due to exchange rate, traveling once we're in Europe, etc.; figuring out destination(s) that will fit our desired vacation style.
We don't mind spending some time in cities, but we would love to see some amazing nature scenery and explore less urban areas. Neither of us have a strong desire to spend a lot of time in museums or waiting in lines at crowded tourist stops (not that we wouldn't do it at all). We are fairly active as well. I personally like the looks of a few destinations upon first glance (Ireland, Switzerland, Italy), but having never been there, desire suggestions from others.
Any recommendations from experienced Europe travelers?

Italy will always be my #1 choice
followed by Switzerland and greece
Sorry to disappoint, but summer airfare to Europe for the 2 of you will be $2500++ so I'm not sure your budget is doable.
ETA: If you can work it out Italy would be my first choice as well.
Munich - Salzburg
We had an amazing time hiking and visiting the Bavarian mountains. It was unbelievably beautiful and the weather wasn't too hot in June/July.
We did Munich - Eagles Nest - Salzburg - hikinig in Toeren National Forest (I probably spelled that wrong) - Fussen - Munich.
Hands down my favorite outdoorsy trip ever.
Cinque Terre, Italy
Great for outdoor enthusiasts- hiking , swimming etc.

As others have mentioned, the price of airfare will kill your budget.
We traveled to Italy for two weeks last September and our trip cost $5000, although our airfare was free as I had enough frequent flier miles for two tickets.
You could do a more budget-minded trip if you took cost cutting measures such as staying in hostels and eating cheap (i.e. pizza, sandwiches, etc). Otherwise, you'll likely have to increase your budget.
I agree with pp. Airfare to Europe in the summer is way high. For our 2 week vacation, we are very close to the $8,000 mark and leave in 2 weeks. We are hitting not only Germany (thanks to long layovers) but Italy, Greece and Turkey via a cruise. If you like cruising, it may be more economical but the air is going to get you. Our air out of LAX for both of us was $2300 alone. If you can juggle your dates a bit I would try.
