Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

We are going the weekend of the 23rd, any suggestions? Things to do? We already know where we are staying in a cabin for 2 of the 3 nights, the 3rd night we're not quite sure where we are staying, or if we are... any input would be helpful! Thanks!!

Re: Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

  • I love hiking and enjoying nature in the Smokies.  I find Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg pretty touristy full of glizt, Ripleys, old time photos, and fudge shops, but it was the first getaway my husband and I took so it is pretty nostalgic for me.

My favorite places to eat are The Peddler in Gatlinburg, Bull Fish Grill in PF, and Smoky Mountain Brewerey or Brew works? in both Gatlinburg and PF.  I like the breakfast at the Apple Barn.

There are some great galleries and fun shops in Gatlinburg.

There are a few wineries that we always visit, but not great wine.

Have a great time and a weekend is probably plenty of time.

  • Thanks! I know we'll be sitting through a 2 hour spiel one day because its one of those horrible time share trips.. but hey.. 2 free nights in a cabin that we might not have been able to do right now, why not? I think even though it'll be touristy we will make the most of it.
  • We went to Pigeon Forge several years ago and sat through one of those timeshares (got free tickets to Dixie Stampede I think) and my parents ended up buying in!  You just never know! I just went there this weekend and had a great time!

Anyway, Apple Barn(not the real name, but I don't remember what it is) is a great place to eat.  Haven't had breakfast there, but it looked awesome.  I have eaten lunch and dinner there and you get so much food and it's all good.

They all are big touristy towns, but it really just depends on what you like doing.  Great Tanger Outlets in Sevierville, HUGE Christmas store in Pigeon Forge(if you're into that), and then lots of fun, little stores in Gatlinburg.  I also love Ripley's Aquarium.  It can be a little pricey, but I think it's great.

Not sure if you are into theme parks, but Dollywood is a great place to go.  It's about $60 per person for a one-day pass, but if you have a pretty long amount of time to spare, I would recommend it.

EDIT: I haven't stayed in a hotel since we bought into our time share, but I have stayed at the Comfort Suites(?) before close to the Apple Barn.  It was nice when we were there; not sure about it now.

  • Don't waste all of your time on the touristy things in town. Go out into the national park. Visit Sugarlands Visitor Center and go have a picnic at the Chimney Tops picnic area, then go to the top of Clingman's Dome. It's totally worth the walk. My other favorite thing to do is go drive around the Arts & Crafts Community. You get to see some really neat little shops with art and other products made by local craftsmen. It's awesome and costs nothing but gas money.

  • I have also heard Cade's Cove was a fun place.  Something about driving around and seeing animals.  I have never been there, but some friends of ours went and liked it.

  • I have been a million times, it is one of my favorite places to visit.  My favorite restaurants are The Apple Barn and the Old Mill.  I hear The Peddlar is an excellent steak resturant but I haven't been there.  The Comedy Barn is an excellent family oriented comedy show.  The Magic Show is also very good.

Cades Cove is part of the National Park, you will see the most animals around sunrise and dusk.  It is a one-way road that loops through a valley, there is lots of pretty scenery and some old settlement churches and cemetaries.  Sometimes the lines of traffic can be kind of long. You might get lucky and see black bear, elk, deer, and turkey.

Driving over the mountains to Cherokee, NC is a wonderful drive full of scenic overlooks.  Cherokee has a large casino if you like that kind of thing. I believe they also have an outdoor drama.

My hands-down favorite thing to do though is sit in the hottub at the cabin and just relax.
