Re: Poll: Save or Splurge

  • Coffee:  I have never had a cup in my life, so no.  I would splurge on a fountain Coke though Stick out tongue

Shoes:  For good ones, yes.  I am not a shoe person, per say, so I like to get decent ones that I can wear everyday and will last a while

Clothing:  Sometimes, but generally I try to shop with coupons

Makeup:  I have found that Bare Minerals works the best for me, so I splurge on that.  Although, I am on auto ship, which saves me some money

Shampoo/toiletries:  Not really, I just buy regular brands at target

Vehicles:  We splurged on our van, because we plan to have it for quite a while, and my car is paid off, which helps

Groceries:  Not really, and I always shop with coupons

Dining out:  Sometimes, but we aren't into really fancy places.   Plus, I don't eat meat so that helps keep food costs down...haha!

Furniture:  Not really, just standard Value City or JCP stuff

Kids (if applicable) or pet (if applicable) items:  Yes, I probably spend the most money on stuff for DD.   Nothing too over the top, but I like shopping for her now more than for myself!

  • The only way I can think to answer this is "compared to most people"...so for all of these things I would say I splurge on these less then most people. Occassionally, I treat myself to a good coffee. I have just a few items of makeup that I splurged on (or asked for for gifts). Clothing, toiletries, groceries, I shop for bargains and save a lot. Groceries I rarely buy store brand and the only splurging I may do is shopping at a specialty grocery store once in a while to get really good stuff (but it's saving in a way because a splurge grocery store trip will save $$ from eating out). Dining out we eat out frequently enough but we're generally conservative when we do. Furniture...we accepted any and all hand me downs, the furniture we bought was neither cheap nor expensive mid line I guess.

No kids. I may splurge on my pet. He eats Innova food and we do buy pet insurance (but again that could end up being more saving/splurging)

     Good poll...gold star for you!

  • Coffee: Most of the time I make coffee with k-cups. Occasionally I will stop by Dunkin Donuts (1x week) or Starbucks (1x every couple months).

Shoes: Definitely don't splurge on shoes. I am not a "shoe person".

    Clothing: No splurges here either.

Makeup: I buy drug store makeup. I do have a couple eye shadows from Sephora that were expensive so that was a splurge, but I have kept them a lot longer than I probably should so that's kind of a save, lol.

Shampoo/toiletries: I buy name brand stuff at the grocery store but not salon products.

Vehicles: I guess it depends on your perspective. We have a Highlander and a Corolla. I guess we splurged a little on the Highlander - we got the Sport model instead of base.

Groceries: I spend a crap ton of money on groceries and I'm not even sure how it happens. I don't shop at any fancy grocery store or anything.

Dining out: We spend a crap ton on this too and are likely to splurge on dinners out.

Furniture: Most of the furniture I've bought has come from Target/Walmart.

Kids (if applicable) or pet (if applicable) items: I guess I am likely to splurge on DS a little bit. I buy his clothes at Target/Kohls usually so nothing TOO expensive, but 98% of the stuff he has I've bought new. We don't have hardly anything used for him. For the cats, we feed them an expensive food, but they had health issues in the past so that's why. They don't have diamond collars or anything, lol.

Anything else you'd like to add: Generally, I'm pretty cheap. But DH and I splurge on gifts for friends/family, we splurge on electronics, and I have an online shopping addiction Smile

  • Coffee: I have a coffee problem. I normally try to go out once during the week. In my office we have a keruig so that helps with the urge to run out and grab something.

Shoes: I tend to only buy one or two pairs a year. I'm not really the shoe buying kind of person, although if you asked hubby I have a crap load.

Clothing: I normally don't buy unless I really gotta have it.

    Makeup:Nope I normally don't buy unless I need something.

Shampoo/toiletries: I tend to buy stuff from Target, etc, no salon products for me.

Vehicles:We only buy when we needed to upgrade. DH's car is paid off and it's a two door, which I hate driving w/two kids, but we have no plans to get a new vehicle anytime soon. We are still paying off the pilot that we brought three years ago. I plan to keep these vehicles for a long time.

Groceries: I write out a list and I use coupons.

Dining out: I like to eat out, but lately, I like to use coupons or find good deals.

Furniture:We haven't purchased furniture in years, last thing from VCF.

Kids (if applicable) or pet (if applicable) items: Yes I purchase things for the girls weekly, although I'm trying to stop. Usually it's clothes etc, b-day gifts, Christmas, and normally it's with a coupon. Dog food wise I shop at our neighborhood pet store and we buy them expensive food (but because we are repeat customer, every other month we get $10 off our bill. Nice perk to keep you coming back).

Anything else you'd like to add:With two in daycare I've now really started to clip coupons, eat out less, and shop less for my personal needs and buy things for the girls.

  • imagemrs. remy:

Let's discuss if you are more likely to splurge or save your money on the following items. Feel free to elaborate:

Coffee: save. A few times a year I splurge on Baltimore Coffee & Tea Co but I can't justify buying it all the time

Shoes: save. I am a bargain hunter.

Clothing: save. I don't buy anything that is not on sale and I use coupons, shop secondhand, etc

    Makeup: splurge on bare minerals

Shampoo/toiletries: splurge (sephora is my vice if that says anything). also I try to use natural brands which can be pricey sometimes

Vehicles: splurge for me. our vehicles are newer (2009 and 2010) because our old vehicles had tons of miles on them and we needed something safe and reliable for the kids. we will drive them into the ground though. And they're both Chevys, nothing luxurious.

Groceries: save. I coupon. I do splurge on some organic items, so using coupons help me feel like I can justify that.

Dining out: save. we don't do this very much due to kids and money

Furniture: save. I can't justify buying nice stuff while we have little kids and pets

Kids (if applicable) or pet (if applicable) items: save on kids stuff-everything for them is hand me down, craigslist, or consignment. pet stuff I guess I kind of splurge because I feed them a fancy food but I seriously feel like it has saved me money in vet bills because they never have had any health problems.

Anything else you'd like to add: nope

  • imagemrs. remy:

In almost every category, I am more likely to save. I am cheap/frugal (depending how you look at it)

    Coffee: Splurge

    Shoes: Save

    Clothing: Save

    Makeup:Save

    Shampoo/toiletries: Save

    Vehicles:Save

    Groceries: Splurge

Dining out: Depends on the day!

    Furniture: Save

Kids (if applicable) or pet (if applicable) items: Only pets for me...I typically save, but I have been splurging on their food lately.

  • Coffee:  Save

Shoes:  I splurge on a few pair of good everyday heels but save on my "fun" shoes.

Clothing:  Both, I splurge on dresses and I do buy lots of clothes, but from places like The Limited, so not high-end or too pricey.

Makeup:  Splurge on Bare Minerals and Smashbox

    Shampoo/toiletries:  Save

    Vehicles:  Save

Groceries:  Save, we usually shop at ShopRite with coupons, but I go to Trader Joe's about once per month to stock up.

Dining out:  Save, we rarely dine out, it's usually more like carryout and that's only once per week at the most.

Furniture:  Both, depends on the item.

Kids (if applicable) or pet (if applicable) items:  NA on the kids items, I wouldn't say that we splurge on our dog but we buy her decent food.

Anything else you'd like to add:  Our biggest joint splurge is probably vacations.  We try to save on everyday costs so that we can plan an awesome vacation each year.

  • Coffee: Save- Coffee is made at home every morning either via the Keurig or the regular coffee maker.

Shoes & Clothing: Save- I'm a bargain shopper and tend to only buy things on sale/clearance.

Makeup: Save- I buy the basics at Target or sometimes Ulta if I have coupons.

Shampoo/toiletries: Splurge- I love Bumble & Bumble shampoo and conditioner.

Vehicles:Splurge- I guess you can say splurge. I just got a new car (Mini Countryman that I love!) because my old one was becoming unreliable.

Groceries: Splurge- I must get back into cutting coupons though.

Dining out: Used to Splurge, now Save- We're trying to limit dining out to once a week.

Furniture: Save- I'll look on craigslist before buying brand new furniture.

Kids (if applicable) or pet (if applicable) items: Kids-Save- We've been given so much clothing for our baby girl that I probably won't have to buy her anything for the next year or so. Pets- Save- We buy the Costco all natural food for our pups.

Anything else you'd like to add: I'm a major bargain shopper. I love going through clearance racks and second hand stores to see what I can find clothing wise.

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Coffee: Save - I always make coffee at home. I usually buy big bags of it at Sam's. I do like special vanilla creamer though so that makes it a bit more pricey. I probably only get a latte or special drink out a few times a year.

Shoes: Both - I have knee and feet issues so I only buy shoes for comfort. Therefore I don't buy shoes that often. I do go all out when it comes to athletic shoes since I have problems. I'd rather be able to exercise and walk comfortably in 20 years than to have cute looking shoes.

Clothing: Save - I hardly ever buy clothes. When I do it's usually at places like Kohl's and Land's End.

Makeup: Save - I usually buy drug store brands except for Bobbi Brown lip gloss.

Shampoo/toiletries: Save - drug store brands again. I always get a ton of lotion and body wash from Bath & Body Works for Christmas. I can't even tell you the last time I bought any for myself.

Vehicles: I guess splurge in that we both have SUV's but DH bought his used and I got my family discount on mine. I've decided my next vehicle will be a small car though.

Groceries:  Both. We go through phases where we'll eat at home a lot and spend a lot at the grocery store and other times where we really scrimp. Since it's summer and I've been really busy, lately we've just been having cereal for dinner so that's pretty cheap.

Dining out: We eat out a lot. Most times it's just simple carry out and we go to special occasion places about every other month, depending on finances.

Furniture: Both - we definitely don't buy high end items like some things I've seen on this board. I'd say we're about average. We don't have hand me downs but we have some stuff from Ikea, Target, Haverty's, Macy's and a lot from Pier 1.

Kids (if applicable) or pet (if applicable) items: No kids but we definitely splurge on our dog. She has a whole closet to herself of clothing, costumes, collars and accessories. She swims at least once a week at a doggie pool. She eats special raw food and organic treats from a special pet store. She also has a really nice bed even though she never uses it. We've also taken special vacations where we can take her along.

Anything else you'd like to add: I spend way more than I will ever admit feeding the birds and squirrels. The bird store people all know me by my first name and I "have" to buy premium feed b/c if I buy the cheap food they just knock it to the ground to pick out the good stuff.

  • Coffee: Save and drink at home (or from the coffee club at work).  i only get a Starbucks or whatever as a treat once in a great while - usually at the mall, lol.

Shoes: Save. I should splurge though.  I end up being cheap and buying a lot of shoes I only kind of like, I should just buy one pair I love.

Clothing: Same as above.  I have lots of clothes that I have accumulated over the years trying to be frugal (shopping sales and the like.)  I should just invest in some quality pieces.

Makeup: Splurge.  I'm not super extravagant but I figure for things like foundation that are going on my skin, I'd rather have it be nice.

Shampoo/toiletries: Save.  Unless I'm getting super nice products I can't really tell a difference and I can't afford shampoo that is 20 - 30 a bottle, so I just save and go for Suave.

Vehicles: I guess save?  We are fairly cheap when it comes to car buying and know what we want before we go shopping.

Groceries:  Save. I try to be frugal at the grocery store and meal plan etc.

Dining out: Splurge. We are big spenders when it comes to eating out.  Its one of our big indulgences.

Furniture:  Save.  We have tons of hand me downs and used furniture. At this point in my life I'm not picky and there are so many other things I'd rather spend my money on.

Kids (if applicable) or pet (if applicable) items: Ummm...I'm not sure how to answer this? lol.  I guess we splurge.  I don't know. Our dogs get expensive food.  DS is still relatively cheap at this stage, still EBF and a lot of his clothes are hand me downs, so I guess we save there, ha!
