Fondant Buttercream Decorating Question

I want to make this cake for my son's 1st Birthday:

I had gone to a local bakery for a quote, and knowing that fondant is expensive on top of my not being a big fan of the taste, I asked if they could use fondant decorations over buttercream icing.  I was told that it could'nt be done, and that they charged $300 and up for 30-40 people minimum.  No Thank You...

My question is, does anyone have experience with using fondant cutout decorations and "gluing" them onto a cake frosted with buttercream?  Any tips for that as well as coloring the fondant?  I've got my buttercream recipe down pat, but have never worked with fondant.

TIA Big Smile

Re: Fondant Buttercream Decorating Question

  • It can be done -- I've been to a couple of kid parties where the cake was frosted with buttercream and then had some small fondant pieces decorating it.  My guess on how to glue it would be to use liquid sugar or additional buttercream so that it hardens.  I also know that the fondant was rolled out thin so as not to create too much weight.

I've tried coloring the fondant (since white is cheaper than the color fondant you can buy at stores) with gel food coloring.  A little goes a long way!  Make sure the fondant is room temperature so that it is more pliable when you are trying to knead in the color.

  • I would do one tier, cover it with red buttercream icing as smooth as possible. Mickey mouse looks like he was cut out with just a circle cookie cutter. Grass around the edges can be done with green buttercream and a dot icing tip. toy characters can decorate the top and the stars are just star cookie cutters on wire (easy). Store cake in a box not Tupperware so air can circulate and fondant won't get too sticky. Fondant easily sticks to buttercream or if icing is dry just add a little water to back of fondant cut out in order to stick to cake. Hope that helps

  • Yes, fondant will stick to the buttercream. Keep it cool though because the fondant might slide off if the icing isn't stiff and gets warm. It might be a little tricky too if you live in a humid climate. I recommend that you buy the red and black fondant already colored. It is hard to get these colors using gel dye. For the other colors you can use white fondant and dye them.
