Stinky towels and stinky kids shoes- how can I get the stink out?

After awhile our towels end up being smelly. I remember my mother's towels lasting for 30 years and not smelling once! We do not have hard water. I have washed in warm, I have washed in cold, used fabric softner, not used it, used dryer sheets and not used them but they still smell. This has happened in multiple residences, so I know it has to do with my washing skills.  Used both front loader and top loader washers. Suggestions?

Kids shoes- after awhile my daughters shoes just stink and give her smelly feet. I assume it is due to socks and sweaty feet. I tried leaving baking soda in them to get the smell out and even washing them but that stink comes back to. Help.

Wow- we sound like a smelly family. We really aren't! LOL

Re: Stinky towels and stinky kids shoes- how can I get the stink out?

  • Here is what I do:  wash the towels in hot water with a cup of vinegar alone, then run again with a cup of baking soda.  That stips the towels of all the residue and smell and actually leaves them felelng fluffier and smelling fresh.  You don't have to do it every time, just when the towels start smelling weird again.  I have always washed my towels in hot water because we live in a humid enviroment had have issues with mildew and am bad at leaving them in the washer too long on occasion, but I picked up the rest from Pinterest. Vinegar and baking soda do magic.  Hope this helps.
  • I have the same problem with my own shoes (I tend to wear flats alot without socks).

So what you need to do is wash the shoes in 1cup baking soda to 3 - 4 cups hot water. I just do this in my laundry tub, I don't use my washing machine. The I take an old tooth brush and scrub the inside of the shoe. I stuff paper towel in the afterward to help absorb the water and keep their shape. Once they are dry I more baking soda and fill my shoes then shake them around a bit to coat the whole inside then dump out the excess. If they come with inserts wash those as well. If they don't I reccommend picking up shoe inserts that can be taken out every night and cleaned. Also I have a spray bottle of vinegar mixed with water half and half and I spray my shoes every other night and it seems to have cut down on the amount of washing I need to do.

Also maybe check if your kids might have a bit of a stinky feet problem (not saying they are dirty because that isn't always the case) try using antibacterial soap on their tootsies, and also (not sure how young they are) soaking feet in warm water and green tea helps kill stinky toes (I use this on my hubby all the time)

The stinky towels - PP has the right idea. I use that method on our towels every now and again and wash all my hubbies workout clothes with vinegar added to the detergent. It really kills the gross bacteria from sweat.

  • I also live in a humid environment, so I always make sure to hang towels up after using them to make sure they dry before putting them in the hamper. I've never had a problem with smelly towels as long as I do this.

  • Do you let the wet towels sit in the washer some time before putting into the dryer?  If your in an area you can line dry outside I would give that a try.  The sun's UV rays kill stinky bacteria.
  • For the towels, I do the vinegar wash, then the baking soda wash and then hang them out in the sun to dry when possible (not in the winter).  Then I wash regular and dry them in the dryer (cause I like towels from the dryer.

I don't do all these steps every time...just when they get stinky, which seems to happen more in the summer when it is more humid out!

Can't really help with the stinky feet issues, but the ideas listed sound great!

  • Thanks everyone- I will try all these suggestions. I appreciate your help. :)
  • The bacteria in the shoes is what causes the smell. One way to get rid of it is to zip the shoes in a plastic bag and place them in the freezer. Leaving them in there for 1-2 days will kill the bacteria and the smell. Repeat if necessary!
  • I just had this problem!!! My cousin who is in the military told me that they use OXY-CLEAN.

Two scoops of oxy-clean and add your normal detergent. Your towels and shoes will smell awesome after!!!
