T&P for Our Dog :/

I have no idea if I've posted any of this here, so here's the whole story...

In May, when we were traveling from CO to AL for our wedding, our mini schnauzer had a grand mal seizure in his crate. He had never had one before, so we were hoping it was a one time kind of thing.

About 2 weeks after we got home from the wedding, I took him for a walk and about halfway through it he started doing things weird flinching/ startling thing. I got him back home asap, and then he seemed fine.

The flinchy thing happened again about a week ago. We were worried that it could be the start of epilepsy, so we took him to the vet.

Two exams, one bout of xrays, blood tests, and an ultrasound later, it seems that his liver is shunted. Meaning that a vessel (that he's had since birth) is carrying blood to bypass the liver, and in consequence his liver has atrophied. Since it isn't functioning normally and can't flush ammonia, the liver is creating gall & bladder stones, and the build up is starting to affect him neurologically.

Today we took him up to CSU (apparently the Mayo Clinic of the pet world), and they ran another ultrasound and were able to pinpoint the shunt. So we're having surgery on Sept. 5th to try and correct it (with apparently the best shunt surgeon in the country), and I am SO freaked out. One of the complications is too much blood flooding the liver, which would essentially kill him, and the other one is uncontrollable seizures that he would need to be euthanized for. They consider him older (at 5 1/2), so that's another concern.

Please keep us in your thoughts!!! I am trying SO hard to stay positive and to not worry about "what if's," but it is tough to look on the bright side :/

TIA, ladies.
