Embroidery Machine...

I'm going to ask for an embroidery machine for Christmas but wanted to start looking into them and looking for good deals.  I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on machines and what I should look for. I'd like something I can hook up to my computer or a flash drive so that I don't have to buy a million cartridges (if that's how it works).  Any suggestions are appreciated!

Re: Embroidery Machine...

  • This one or this one is a great starter machine! I don't think you need the PED Basic software to go with it to purchase applique/embroidery designs and fonts and transfer them to your computer because it looks like a USB cord is included.

  • My recommendation is to get the largest hoop you can afford.  I know many people who outgrew their 4x4 inch hoop quickly.  I have a brother PE 700, god solid machine with a 5x7 hoop.

  • Thanks. I'd say my budget is about $400 unless there is a great machine for not much more. I'd rather get a good machine that will last than get another one in a few years.

  • With a $400 budget you are looking at a 4x4 inch hoop.  Look around at embroidery sites to see what designs as offered for that size hoop.

  • what budget would I need for a decent machine that would have a bigger hoop? I see machines that aren't too much higher but i'm not sure if they are any good.

  • Try looking here.  http://www.kenssewingcenter.com/brother-embroidery-machines-c-51_52.html

I would not recommend the singers.  I know several seamstresses with singer embroidery machines and a few digitizesrs.  They do not recommend them.  Most people like brother embroidery machines.

  • Also don't forget you will need embroidery thread and stabilizer.

Here is a great link to a stabilizer workbook.   http://www.rnkdistributing.com/pdf-files/FlorianiWorkbookStabilizer.pdf

  • My grandma has one that she has tons of problems with so my recommendation is to buy it from somewhere that can do the service on site, her's seems to get sent away to be fixed constantly!

  • I have a brother PE-770 that I really enjoy. It is pretty easy to use.  I've seen it on Amazon for around $500 at times.  It works with a 5x7" hoop.  There have been a few projects (towels, large bags) that I wish I had a bigger hoop, but it works well for just about everything.  I actually got mine off Craigslist for $400 and got a TON of extras. Big Smile  The best part is that my LQS is a Brother dealer, so even though I didn't buy it there, I can still get my machine serviced there!

I downloaded free digitizing software, but I'm having a hard time figuring it out.  I think it's called Embroidery ABC.  I'm pretty tech savvy, but it's been frustrating.  I can do lettering just fine, but actually digitizing pictures and applique is difficult for me.  Maybe if I actually bought software it would be a bit more user friendly, but I'm not ready to pony up big money quite yet!  If there's something I really want to work out, it's worth it to me to buy a pattern off Etsy or an embroidery site.  Either way, I use the USB port quite a bit.

  • I have a brother PE770 and bought a 5x7 hoop after the fact. This machine hooks up to my PC as well. And I love it!
