No more spare tire

PSA for anyone who has purchased a car recently. They may no longer come with a spare. I was in a freaky accident on Friday. I ran over a handle on the turnpike, something that normally you run over and keep on going, but in my case the handle got sucked into the wheel well, destroyed the rim and shredded the tire, and sent me spinning into the grassy median. I was in a car owned by my employer, so I knew nothing about the vehicle or what came with it.

The tow truck operator came  and got me out of the median, and then tried to get a new tire on, so see if the car could even move on its own. No spare tire, the vehicle came with only a can of fix a flat. I looked into this, and apparently it's fairly common now.

I wanted to share this with others, in case you have one of these vehicles and didn't realize you have no spare and want to get one.

List is here.

Re: No more spare tire

  • Oh wow, good to know. I never would have even thought there wouldn't be a spare!
  • That sucks big time. It is very common on fleet vehicles (company cars & rentals) not to have spares. A lot of cars on that list used to come with full size spares and not just doughnuts which are pricey. A lot of these cars are then sold at auction and to dealers, so check the trunk/underneath if buying used. Well, that is a good idea regardless since the "disappear"

Just an FYI, if you buy a new car, the spare will be listed on the window sticker as standard/optional equipment.

  • Very interesting and something I did not know. (I learn so much here!)

Side note, though, I'm glad you're okay!!
