School related vent

WTH are textbooks so stupid expensive and why does each professor feel the need to require multiple textbooks for a basic class.  I just had to drop my sociology class b/c the professor is requiring that we purchase a "custom bundle" of textbooks only available from the bookstore that has- get this- 6 yes 6 friggin textbooks to the tune of $575.  For a basic sociology class.  And of course there are no used copies.

It's bad enough the other classes that I have to take are requiring multiple textbooks, all in all, I'm paying over $1000 for textbooks for 3 classes and a lab. and those are used and/or rented.  I need 3 books for microbiology, 2 for psychology and 2 for math and all of these classes require online keys that cost anywhere from $100 to $175 dollars each. Mind you tuition is only $2750 a semester at this school.

gggrrrrrr, sorry just had to get that off my chest

  • That is crazy! Have you looked on Amazon.com or will the professor allow you to use an older edition of the text for a discounted price?

  • Do you know anyone that took those classes last year?  I have bought and sold MANY textbooks in my career from fellow peers.  Sites like half.com or amazon.com sometimes have really good deals too on new or used books.  Sucks how expensive they are, but sometimes you can sell them at the end and recoup at least a portion of the cost.  I was a chemistry major in college and am just finishing pharmacy school, and those science texts are massive (and therefore $$$) so I feel your pain :(

  • I learned after my first semester in college to go to the first class and get the syllabus- before buying any books! Of course, you can't really follow this rule for summer classes because there's no time, but seriously, I always go to the first class and determine how the book will be used before I buy it.  If it is a "reference" (which a lot of times they are), I don't buy it.  If it is a "read this so you know what's going on in class" kind of book, I get an older edition.  If it's "answer these questions on this page" kind of book, I absolutely get the exact book they require, or I make a friend and split the cost and share the book with them.  But like PP said, it is almost always cheaper through Amazon (but know that it might take a week to get your book at that point.  Most classes don't really dive into the class until the second or third week, though). Good luck.  Trust me, I know how much it sucks!

  • i don't know what she's going to school for, but in my major (engineering) if the professor required a brand new edition of a book a lot of times you actually really needed the new edition and it wasn't as easy as just buying the older edition. :(

but for a basic sociology professor to require an absurd custom book package that is impossible to buy used is just stupid. there are SO many good soc books for the prof to choose from.

i know someone else suggested amazon, but i also used to use half.com as well. sorry the books are so expensive, i hope you're able to work it out.

  • Ouch! That is insane for one course! I feel your pain though, my last two courses were around $450 for books per course. I could only ever afford to do two at a time.

I hope you find a way to figure it all out! GL!

  • Thanks ladies.  I'm working on advancing my nursing degree, and like a PP said, you can't get old editions for the science crap, and of course 2 of the classes are requiring new editions.  I actually rented the book for my lab- it's a workbook.  Then I photocopy it, stuff it in a binder and return it withing 14 days and get a refund.  Sneaky I know, but it does help the cost.

It's all these stupid access keys they are requiring.  I just transferred into this school and have not run into this before with the exception of a computer lab.  I'm going to hold off until after the first class to see what this is all about.
