I can't even put into words how stressed I am...

I have had multiple emotional breakdowns the last few days.  School is starting next week, which means tuition is due around the same time.  Guess what?  I can't afford it.  H assured me months ago that we could so I trucked on, but it ended up being way more expensive than we thought, and H is telling me now that "technically" we can afford it, but it would drain our savings down to zero and we would have to wait about 7 years for TTC.  I am NOT ok with that.  If I knew I was sacrificing children for 7 years to go to this particular school, I never would have enrolled in the first place.  I have days to make a huge decision about where I'm going to get my teaching licensure, the community college tuition is due today (that's not a big deal, but I have to drive 40 minutes to go pay it, and I'll probably end up changing my class schedule now), and I feel like my entire life is unfolding before me in a matter of days.  This drama started Friday night and I've just been a MESS ever since.  No clue what I'm gonna do.

  • Have you tried applying for financial aid, student loans, or any scholarships? I sucks to have to borrow more money but if it relieves any stress its worth it. Don't give up your dream for teaching and its not far to have to sacrifice TTC.

  • Oh no! This is stressful and I am so sorry.

I agree with PP, apply for financial aid, scholarships, etc.  I know it will suck to have to pay any loans back, but atleast you would be in school and following your dream. Can you pay tuition online? Most schools these days will do that. I am taking some classes this fall and I was able to pay online with a credit card.

Good luck and don't give up!

  • I agree with the PPs.  You could also contact the business office and see if you can set up a payment plan.  My university allowed students to do this, and the tuition had to be paid in full by the end of the semester.  I think students normally made a payment a month.  This way you/H could continue to work, put money into your savings, and your entire account wouldn't be drained.

     Good luck!

  • Apparently there is a new policy (not sure if this is only Ohio or what) that if you are not working on your first Bachelors Degree, you get ZERO financial aid!! My school went out on a limb for me and got me half of what I had last year, but the following school year I won't get a penny.  This is a private school and I've decided to just do my licensure, not even the Masters anymore and it's just stupid to pay $40K for a license that's the same as a license for $5K somewhere else.  If we were talking about the Masters, I would be more willing to dish out to money since it's a really good school, but for crying out loud! According to my research, a $40,000 license is THE SAME as a $5,000 license...

    And so, here we are...

  • Ugh, that totally sucks!  I don't know if the financial aid part is true everywhere, but I have heard that about several other Midwest states.  I went to private undergrad and graduate school, and I know what you mean about being torn- I don't regret my decisions, but I know I could have had the exact same degree(s) for about half (or less!) of the cost going to a state school.  Good luck making your decision, just go with your gut and don't look back once you decide.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but you have looked into transferring elsewhere?  Also, how much extra money is this license really going to make you (esp. if you are wanting to have kids?)  If you figure by the time you pay $40k back in loans, you'll probably end up paying $50k with the interest - how many years working with this licensure is it going to take you to break even?  Just a thought, if you'll only be making an extra $5k a year, it'll take you 10 years just to make it worth it...Good luck, hope everything works out.

  • Call the school's financial aid office and ask them about a Perkin's loan.  They don't like to tell them, about them, but it might be an option.

Here I feel bad bitching about book costs.   :(

  • EDIT: Sorry, meant to quote Aurora'sEnvy here.

Not a dumb question.  Totally why I'm stressing, because I am looking to transfer and I feel like I have to decide by the time school starts next week.  But I guess I'm just going to basically take this semester off and take a class or two at the local community college just to show my (new) employer that I still have every intention of getting this license.  And the license is a teaching license, so I can be a teacher.  Therefore, I can't get a job at all without it.
