Harrisburg Hospital or Holy Spirit? (and pedi recommendations)

I had my first "check-in" type appointment at my OBGYN today and she asked if I'd rather deliver at Harrisburg Hospital or Holy Spirit.  I guess they deliver at both and I can go to whichever I prefer although if someone else is already in labor, I have to go to wherever the doctor on call is with them.  I have heard good things about Harrisburg Hospital but nothing about Holy Spirit.

I was also asked if I had thought about or decided on a pedi yet.  what??? I was going to check into Heritage Pediatrics on the Carlisle Pike because I go to Heritage (in Bowmansdale) and really like it there.  Any other recommendations of offices/doctors you love?

Re: Harrisburg Hospital or Holy Spirit? (and pedi recommendations)

  • I will recommend Harrisburg Hospital because I had a good experience there and I work for Pinnacle Health Wink

I had a normal labor and delivery (besides being induced with Pitocin) and my recovery was perfectly normal.  The nurses were very busy and short-staffed as usual, but I didn't have many needs so I was cool with that.  I also am a nurse, so I totally understand being under staffed.

I highly recommend Heritage Pediatrics, as do a few of the other moms on here.  That is where I got the recommendation to go there!

    Who is your OB?

  • I am going to Cumberland Valley Obstetrics and Gynecology.  It is down off 114 near Walmart.  I have seen Colleen Foos twice (when she put my IUD in and took it out).  There are two other OBs at the office (can't remember their names) so I guess I rotate on seeing them at appointments.

Sara - do you go to the one on the Pike as well (conveniently located by the liquor store lol) or is there another office?

  • I used to go to the same OB practice.  I didn't care for Dr. Bucher, so I switched.

Yes, I go to the one on the Pike.  I think that is the only office for peds, but I may be wrong.  I think sunriz and MrsPABlondie take their kids there also.

  • ugh great.  I have my first appt on the 17th. I have no idea who it's with though.  Where did you end up switching to?
  • Give them a shot. I know a lot of people like that practice.  My problem with that particular doctor was that I had an abnormal pap and had to be treated for it.  He talked over my head because he knew I am a nurse.  I always felt rushed with him too.  I switched to an OB who is no longer practicing.  After her, I started going to Womens First (used to be McCall, Banagon and Hawn).  I've been going to them ever since.  They have an office in the Fredricksen Center and one in Harrisburg on Union Deposit.
  • I delivered Addy at Holy Spirit (with Center for Women's Health) and had a wonderful experience.  I was in 9 days (d/t high blood pressure/severe pre-e) and got to know the nurses and OB techs quite well,  Everyone was super!!  The food was also very good.  I will deliver there again when the time comes.  Several of my friends recommended the OB practice (they only deliver at Holy Spirit) and very had good experiences there also.

As, Sara mentioned Addy does go to Heritage Peds on the Pike.  We have been very happy with them, with the exception of one or two things.  Just a matter of different opinions between us and them...nothing major.  We really like Dr. Shrift and the nurses are all really  nice.  I like that when you call a person answers vs. and automated answering and they are really good about calling you back with any questions you have.

If you would like any other info, please let me know.

    GL!

  • I delivered Raymond at Harrisburg Hospital and they were great considering my circumstances, everyone was very understanding.  Both of my SIL's delivered there and most of my friends and I've never heard anything bad about them.  they are supposed to have a great NICU as well.  I only had one friend deliver at Holy Spirit but I don't think she had any issues there either.
  • I delivered my first at Harrisburg and my second at Holy Spirit.  I much prefered Holy Spirit as I felt it was a much more relaxed atmosphere, and had great care from both the doctors and nurses there.  When I had Eloise at Harrisburg, it was so crowded there and they were doing construction, so I got stuck in a shared room with another mom and baby.  That was absolutely awful.

At Holy Spirit, the room I gave birth in was the one I stayed in, so there was no rush to get the baby weighed and measured.  She laid on me for an hour and a half before they even gave her a bath and took her measurements (and that was only at my insistence since I was so curious).  At Harrisburg, they only give you an hour or so in the birthing room with the baby before you are sent to a recovery room.  It felt more rushed there. Another plus with Holy Spirit is the food.  I highly recommend the carrot cake!  :)

  • Rachel was delivered at Holy Spirit.  They have always been awesome with all the deliveries between me and my sisters  (5 babies total).  I'd have to recommend them!
  • I delivered at Harrisburg Hospital, and I would recommend it.  Although, I can't compare to anywhere else.  I also recommend Heritage Pediatrics.  Everyone in the office is nice.
