Don't think I'll ever forget this "first day of school"
Today was the first day with students and it was craziness. We had one teacher call out who was sick so as we were scrambling to find a sub and lesson plans for him. We all realized another teacher never showed up to work yesterday and wondered what was going on with him. An admin came up to me in the hallway between classes and told me the co-worker we were wondering about died. DIED. WTF?!
We don't know any details. He was a new teacher so we've only known him for a few weeks. Mid-40s, seemingly healthy dude, kept to himself. A lot of the times I talked to him he was venting about how stressed he was or he was angry about admin changing things on him. Someone else also pointed out he made comments about being broke a lot. We're kinda all wondering if it was suicide, but I doubt we'll ever know.
It was just crazy watching every faculty member find out throughout the day and seeing their jaws literally drop. Most of us asked if it was for real. The students didn't know him yet so thankfully none of them have to deal with it.
Who knows what the hell will happen this year now... definitely was not expecting this at all.

Wow. That's definitely one heck of a way to start the school year. I'm sorry for the loss of the teacher. It's definitely good that the students didn't have a connection with him. Suicide would be sad.
As for the sick teacher -- I can't imagine being a teacher and missing the first day of school! I'm interested to hear how your Day #2 goes!!

And welcome to school! That's crazy about the new teacher. But, as you pointed out, at least the kids didn't know him yet so you didn't have to deal with that layer of it as well.

Crazy times! Hopefully this is something like the wedding rehearsal - if it's a bad rehearsal, it's a great wedding... Crazy first day, awesome school year?
