Tell me about the North Hills/Ross Twp
we are seriously considering buying a house in the north hills area. the school district would likely be north hills.
if you live in the area:
1. what do you love about it?
2. what don't you like about it?
3. what do you wish you would have known before you moved there?
Thanks!!!!!
Re: Tell me about the North Hills/Ross Twp
I grew up in North Hills but now live in NA. Sister still lives in NHills
I like that its small, has all the shops that you need within short driving distance
I like the closeness to downtown, 279, or to go north
I don't have any complaints about it really.
We go to Catholic school so I can't attest to the school district but if I was sending my kids to public high school I would rather have them go to NHills over NA b/c of the size issue.

Like Sheila, I grew up in the NH and that's where we are now. I graduated NH and my sister and BIL teach there, so I really dont' have any complaints. It's a big district without being TOO big.
1. I LOVE that it's so easy to get into the city. We lived in the South Hills for a year and I didn't realize how spoiled I was until I had to go through the tubes to get to the city.
2. McKnight Road at Christmas can get annoying, but I think I'm immune to it by now. Tim still complains about McKnight.
i moved to the north hills 2 yrs ago and i really do love it. I live less than 5 minutes from 79 and 279 and can be downtown in less than 15 mins. i live in Avonworth SD so i can't comment on the schools.
like sarah, i lived in the south hills for 6 years and it is just so so so much easier to get around up here in the north!
I moved out of Ross earlier this year. I would have loved to have stayed in the NH district, but found our forever home in NA.
1. I loved the convenience of getting just about anywhere. I only moved to McCandless, but it takes A LOT longer to get places from our current location. Or maybe it just seems that way. Our previous location was VERY convenient.
2. I still follow what is going on the Ross Township government and it seems to be going downhill. They recently fired the township manager and it just didn't make any sense. I also HATED HATED HATED McKnight Road at Christmastime. My property backed to McKnight and between the traffic and noise I despised that part of Christmas. Helicopters overhead on black Friday - I won't be missing that this year.
3. I don't think there was anything in this category for me.
Good luck!!
We just moved to Ross (from out of state) a few months ago. We picked it for the schools district and convenience for my husband to travel in to Oakland for work. It's a pretty easy commute and he doesn't get stuck in traffic much.
I really like how convenient everything is. I'm still trying to find my way around but do find a lot of traffic on mcknight road, but it's manageable.
My main complaint, so far, is how gross the grocery stores are in Ross. Maybe it's just the ones I've tried, but I'm not impressed. I've been driving 20 minutes north to wexford to go shop at whole foods and market district. That's been a huge bummer. Sounds like a silly complaint but every week it drives me nuts.
I can't really say I know much else in order to comment further since I'm still finding my way around and settling in.
Which ones have you tried? Wexford definitely has nicer stores but the GE on Route 8 is new and they are going to be remodeling the McKnight store soon. West View GE is definitely questionable. Not a fan of the Foodland but Kuhn's is a nice basic store, nothing fancy but I like that they carry Boar's Head lunch meat.
I grew up in the North Hills, but went to NA not North Hills. My parents moved to Wexford/McCandless when I was in 8th grade and then to Franklin Park about 15 years ago. We lived in Ross before we moved to WI.
I love the area, I think it is easy to get around. And yes, McKnight gets congested but I would take it over 19 in the South Hills any day. Plus, there are tons of other ways to get around besides going on McKnight.
We live close to Mcknight so I've tried the Kuhns, the new bottom dollar, and the GE. I don't mind them for basic stuff but the produce has all been pretty meh.
We're big organic/natural food eaters too, so I haven't had much luck finding that stuff anywhere nearby.
I just google mapped (I'm still learning my way around) the glenshaw GE and that might be a good option to try. Thanks.
Yeah, if you are looking for organic your area really isn't the market for that and going to Wexford is definitely your best bet. The Glenshaw/Shaler GE is a new store and definitely carries more than McKnight plus they have a great beer selection.
