birth control pills- feeling anxious?

Hi Ladies!

I just got married a few weeks ago and LOVE it so far! An issue that I've been having for over a year now is trusting birth control pills to, well, do their job. Before we got married, we always used double protection (condoms and the pill), but starting on the wedding night, we're just relying on the pill for pregnancy prevention. I've been on the pill since I was 19 (for 3 years), but switched from a brand name to a generic about 6 months ago. I know that taking it at the same time each day and using a backup while taking antibiotics/getting sick are crucial, but how much can I rely on my pill to protect me from getting pregnant? We're pretty young (22 and 23) still, so we want to wait about 5 years before having kids. Any responses would be appreciated!  I'm excited to join this board and hear from all of you!

Re: birth control pills- feeling anxious?

  • The only thing I can say is that when you are on antibiotics your birth control could take up to 3 months to get back in your system. A friend of mine didn't know that and now she has a baby. Other than that, most pills are 99% effective.

GL and congrats on your marriage! :)

  • If you didn't like condoms as added protection, what about using a spermicidal insert instead?  There's only a 0.1% difference in the effectiveness with typical use, according to the Planned Parenthood stats.

  • I've been on a generic pill version since I was 18 (when I began sleeping with my husband, but back then we were engaged!) -- so that is 8 years ago...we haven't used condoms at all during that time (dangerous, I know...) but no babies!!

I love the Pill because I can skip taking the last week of placebo pills and jump right into the next pack of pills, to prevent my period for a special occasion (our anniversary, birthdays, pool days, beach days. etc) but he likes when I get my period so we know we're not pregnant.

You can't do this with all pills, OP - so check with your doctor if that appeals to you!

My husband and I exclusively used the pill during college - no condoms or anything else.  No baby!  A few years after graduation we switched to not finishing inside + pills.  Ten years on - still no baby!

When used correctly, the pill is over 99% effective.  But, it's really up to your comfort level.  It's not good to be disinterested in sex because you're terrified that you're going to get pregnant.  Do whatever allows you relax and have fun.

  • We just use the pill- have been doing that for almost 5 years- and no baby. I take it pretty religiously and never mix with antibiotics or ibuprofen (according to the booklet for my pills, it can affect it) and am generally just very vigilant about any possible interactions. As PPs have said, when used correctly, it is 99.9% effective.

  • Thanks for the response! Jus tour of curiosity, what brand do you take where Ibuprofen is an issue? I take that all the time for headaches, etc. so I hope mine aren't affected by it as well!
