In MARCH, DH and I paid this guy 50% down to build us some built ins for our study which DH wanted to convert to a man room. Guy was working on big project and said it would be a few weeks and we said we weren't in a hurry. In April, I inquired and he was still working on the other project. In May, same thing, other project. Finally, in JUNE we went over to his house to look at the progress and things appeared to be going well. In JULY, the built ins still had not been installed, so we went over to his house again (he lives near us) and they had been painted but he was just wrapping some stuff up. In the middle of July (four months later), he finally installed the built ins but we kept having to schedule him again and again because this piece wouldn't be done or this piece wasn't done, whatever.
Now, I know we kept telling him "Oh, we aren't in any hurry" but it is now the end of August and they still aren't done. He was to come by this morning to finish them - when he came to the door he said 'Oh, are you sick?' and I said kind of but that shouldn't prohibit him from finishing. Honestly, at this point, *I* could finish them out, just some caulking and such but we are missing one door and I really do not want to put on hardware because I suck at it. OH, and that is what we paid HIM to do. He leaves to get something from home, DH texted me that he isn't coming back because he can't get sick.
I am so so so so so p!ssed. It has now been five months. We are throwing a huge party on Saturday and my damn built ins aren't done. We do still owe him some money and I am considering NOT paying him. Although I said we aren't in a hurry, nearly six months for these built ins exceeds ridiculous. I guess we are lucky that of all the crap that has been done to our house this is the first thing that has been a cluster but seriously, wtf.
Re: Oh my Lord, I am so annoyed.
When I think of "we aren't in a hurry" I'm thinking like 1 month, even 2 months maybe but six months is effing excessive.
And he doesn't come back bc he can't get sick? Seriously? I have yet to meet a person that has said "Oh hells yeah! I totally have time to get sick right now. I want to be miserable and breathe through my mouth for a week." Good grief.
No, not unusual. For us it is unusual because, for instance, when we redid our kitchen and bathroom, we would pay our contractor at the end of the week - whereas he would require his other customers to pay half of the contract price down. With this guy, without him knowing us, not unusual.
And nope, no written contract. It is a $2,500 job so we didn't feel like a contract was really necessary. He had GREAT recommendations so I feel like we did all the right stuff. I feel like now we should have gone with our normal guy even though he would have been significantly more.
And seriously, it isn't like I was going to be sharing a toothbrush with him or had my tongue down his throat while he was working, I was on the other side of the house. I understand not wanting to get sick, *I* can't really be sick right now either. I do think if we wouldn't have been on him the past few months, it still wouldn't be done which irks me.
Goes to show...you get what you pay for....(although the built ins do look nice, at this point, I would have paid more to get them done in a reasonable period of time)...
