NYC - take subway or cabs?

I'm about to go tomorrow for a quick weekend trip. She has mentioned taking the subway, to save money..  but I am sort of geared more towards cabs. I like being above ground! ha! I get nauseated really easily (yes, cabs have made me ill, but I've never ridden a subway before.. so nothing to compare it to)...

One thing is getting to our hotel from LGA - I saw online it takes an hour subway, 20 min by cab. That seems like a no-brainer.. but is the subway REALLY going to take an hour to go 8 miles?

I just need some subway vs cab perspectives here..  thanks!

Re: NYC - take subway or cabs?

  • there isn't a subway close to LGA. you have to take a bus to the nearest subway stop. this might help you out. http://gonyc.about.com/cs/airlinesairports/a/getto_lga.htm

LOL 20 minutes by cab. sure-if no one else is on the road and where you're going is directly on the other side of the bridge. otherwise-assume it will take longer especially at rush hour. where is your hotel located??

if oyu want to spend the $ for cabs that's fine but keep in mind it generally takes longer because of traffic. imo-take the subway. you can also take the bus which is much cheaper than a cab but is subject to traffic issues. your call.

  • Yes cabs are much more convenient, but you deal with traffic and it's a lot more $$$.  I have no problems with taking the subway - NYC has one of the best and efficient subways.  Yes, it's not luxurious or sometimes very clean, but it's a better bet against traffic and a lot cheaper.  When I lived there and people visited me, I always took the subway with my guests to have them truly experience NYC.  If you really don't like it after trying it once or twice, then just buck up and take the cab, but keep in mind that it may not get you anywhere faster due to traffic.

  • You may want to take a cab from LGA - tired after your flight, carrying luggage - but once in the city, ride the subway. If you prefer to be above ground and are not in a rush, take a bus. Some of the city routes are so scenic, they are better than Hop-on/off :) I love the M5, for example - it shows off Riverside Drive, Broadway, Columbus Circle, and then goes down 5th Ave, so you get to see Rockefeller Center, Empire State building, Flatiron, Soho, and more, for a bargain price of $2.25. Enjoy NYC!

  • Get a car service. Public transportation is so pedestrian.

LOL noooo, walking is pedestrian! (you'll forgive the pun-loving foreigner :)

  • Go for the subway. No need to spend extra bucks on cab because traffic will surely going to irritate you in the cab. So, my vote is for subway.

Subway!  We almost missed 2 dinner reservations and with one, got out of the cab and ran to the nearest subway.  Traffic above ground is awful all the time and you have to find a cab or wait inline at your hotel's cab stand.  We bought a one week subway card and with the hopstop app it is SO EASY.  I also get sick in the cabs - all the starting and stopping, but was fine on the subway.  I am now a subway convert.  We even to it to JFK to fly home, since by the time we got to our hotel on arrival I was so motion sick, I was miserable.

  • Coming from LGA, we took a bus and then transferred to the subway.  It was a lot cheaper than taking a cab.
