Military Hotels/Cheap Travel

Hi-

We are currently stationed at McGuire AFB and wanting to plan a road trip thru New England this fall. We are trying to do it on a budget and thinking about staying at military hotels or at least places with military discounts. My question is: what is the best place/website to look up places to stay or places with military discounts? We've been stationed overseas so I'm not used to looking up military things stateside. Thanks for your help!

Re: Military Hotels/Cheap Travel

  • When talking to hotels, be sure to ask if they have a military discount.  Military rates and discounts are often two different things.  Military rates are based on per diem allowances for TDY travel.  They are sometimes higher than the regular rates.

We like GVR Travel.  They are a great website for military discount travel.  I've also noticed that the military hotels who have privatized don't have the great rates they used to.  They are usually on par with the average hotel costs for the areas.

Also, call the hotel directly instead of looking online or on the corporate site.  We've often been given a lower rate when actually speaking to some one there than through the other venues.

  • Not sure about actual websites, but The Constitution Inn in Chalestown MA is a great place to stay because they give you reduced rates based on rank.  It's only a 10 minute walk to downtown Boston from there and right next to the Charlestown Navy Yard.  In fact, my husband and I are headed up there this weekend!  :)

  • I would also suggest looking to see if there are military bases where you are going to be traveling. You can stay in their lodging and I have found that this saves money as well.

A lot of hotels on larger bases are privatizing now.  They know longer structure the pricing by rank like they used to.  They are pretty much in line with the rates of hotels off base.  It sucks but this is the way the government is trying to save money on base.

You may  not be charged by rank in some of them, but they typically are better rates than off post. They are also used to PCS stays meaning longer visits so they are better equiped. For example, our room had a kitchenette and pots and pans. There are also laundry rooms. I personally stay on base if I can bc I get more for my money.
