BBC: But Enough About Me...discussion

I'm going to post a separate thread with some discussion questions I found for BEAM, and use this one for general thoughts/reactions.  What did you think of the book?

My initial reaction is that I really connected to Jancee Dunn.  I grew up in central NJ in the 80s.  Some of the places she talked about are familiar to me, and that gave me a little thrill while reading.  I identified with her wanting to break out of her humdrum existence, and when she was sitting in the Rolling Stone lobby, feeling completely out of place, a suburban girl in the big city.

Re: BBC: But Enough About Me...discussion

  • I will say, I liked this book more than I expected to.  I really didn't have any expectations, had honestly never heard of it before BBC picked it, had never really heard of Jancee Dunn, don't read Rolling Stone, so I really had no frame of reference.  In fact, I almost sat this one out.  But I decided to go ahead and read it because it has decent reviews on amazon and Good Reads, and I read pretty quickly so I figured I'd go for it.

Was it my favorite book that I've ever read? Absolutely not.  But I did think it was pretty funny, and enjoyed her overall life story. I also thought the "advice" for interviewing celebrities was interesting.

I didn't really feel like I could relate to Jancee, but I did feel like she had a very interesting story, and I think it shows how hard it would be to sort of hang out with the sorts of people that she hangs out with, and not get bogged down in a less than wholesome lifestyle.

Overall, I guess I would say that I enjoyed it far more than I expected to.
