Hello ladies..... do DD had her yearly ear check at the ENT and they are suggesting having her adnoids out. I know it is common..... DH is up in arms and thinks we need to get 2nd opinion etc. Sure I do not want to put her under for surgery if not needed but she has been getting sinus infections lately vs ear infections with a cold and the ENT said with her snoring and she is a mouth breather. We do plan to talk to the ped. Just wanted to hear from others whose children had them removed. Thank you!

Re: Adenoids
Noah had both his tonsils and adenoids removed. Noah snored like a trucker...like you could hear him throughout the entire house. He also had sleep apnea - which in the longrun is very bad for the heart. Because his apnea (which snoring is an indicator of) was so bad we had to go for an EKG to test his heart...it was scary to hear things like that. The hardest part for Noah was the tonsils, so I would think the adenoid surgery would have a quicker surgery time and a quicker recovery time. I don't regret it at all, he doesn't snore and I think he gets much more restful sleep now, too. Hope that helps!
Dr. Chi at Children's did the surgery and I can't say enough good things about him.
Well, I know quite a few kids who have had them out, and have had improvement in sleep for sure. But I understand both sides. I would definitely get the opinion of the ped and, if it makes your hubby feel better, get a 2nd opinion. I remember when Gavin had to get ear tubes at 11 months old, DH wasn't thrilled either, but (at the risk of sounding selfish) the numerous ear infections was not only affecting DS, but it was affecting me and my job, since I was the one always taking time off for appts., fevers and sick days. (It did help that I went to an ENT I knew professionally, though, so I was confident in his diagnosis/decision.)
Good luck!!!
My three sons!
Caileigh had them done when she was 3. We took her for a hearing test and found out she had some reduced hearing so they checked her adenoids & they were enlarged. She didn't have any problems with ear infections at that point but the following year got them so had tubes when she was 4.
That being said, she also was a snorer & mouth breather & we noticed a pretty big difference after the adenoids were out. She had a tough time when she woke up - was very agitated but she also had an IV in so that may have been in. B/c she had no problems with waking up after tubes. None of my kids did.
I understand the concern. I would just ascertain whether they think its medicall necessary to remove them now & what the risks are to keep them in & make your choice. I do not have huge concerns with anesthesia for kids but that's just me. My DH doesn't either but he is in the med profession so around it everyday.
How time flies! Caileigh (9), Keira (6) & Eamon (3)
Thanks ladies! This is all so helpful. I spoke to the nurse at the peds office and she gave me a name for 2nd opinion. We are actually headed there today.
Thank you all.
Kelsey had hers removed at 18 months due to repeat sinus infections, horrible sleep/snoring and lack of appetite. Since the surgery in feb, she has not gotten sick again (knock on wood!) and the other issues resolved too. After the surgery, the dr said her adenoids were huge and likely causing apnea, which is a scary thought!
The thought of surgery is definitely scary, so I understand that. I was definitely apprehensive about it but I'm so glad we did it now. The recovery was minimal - id say she was back to normal within a day or two.
I hope your second opinion appt goes well!
