Pregnancy - cramps

Okay, is it just me or have the other pregnant ladies out there had crazy amounts of cramping while in the first trimester? I read that menstrual like cramps are normal, but I'm getting them every day and almost always in the late evening and over night. They're killing my sleep and I'm so exhausted to begin with, it's not really helping!

Re: Pregnancy - cramps

  • I didn't so much with this one, but I did with DD. Cramping is very common in early pregnancy, just as long as it's isn't painful. If it's painful and consistant I would talk with your doctor.

  • Hmmmm, while it's not overly painful, it is painful. But more of a mild pain. A heating pad helps right away. I've read though that I can't really slap the heating pad right on my abdomen, so I'm lying with it very low on my stomach (basically on my bikini line), just for some relief. Within 5 minutes of that, I'm good though.

I don't have an OB-GYN appointment until early October though, which is frustrating. I do have an ultrasound through my genetics doc in a couple weeks though, so we can at least see how things are progressing.

  • Yea as far as the pain level as long as your not doubled over in pain you should be ok. I would just try and call your doctor's office even though you don't have an appointment and see if there is a nurse or assistant you can talk to. I know my Dr.'s assistant is always great about answering questions when I have concerns. When is your ultrasound?! It's such an amazing feeling to see your child for the first time.

  • Thanks! The most I've had is one weird, very painful spasm, but it lasted for a couple seconds and other than that, I'm not too bad. I'll see how the next week goes and then maybe try phoning. I figure if I have the cramps at night and sickness during the day I'm going to be a very unhappy lady, but so far I'm feeling good during the day.

No date set for the ultrasound just yet, but doc's assistant told me it would be soon as they need the u/s to confirm dates before I go for cvs testing.

  • I haven't had any, but I have read it's normal.  Hope the ultrasound comesback that everything is okay.

  • I was pretty crampy in the beginning.  As long as it isn't accompanied by bleeding, it should be okay.

Now I just seem to get weird "wave" pains higher up as everything grows.  It's kind of like a flutter... but definitely not a baby flutter.  Just things moving around.

  • I agree that as long as the cramps aren't too painful then it should be fine. I had a lot of cramping and it seemed to focus on one side. BUT, if there is any change in the pain or spotting at all, I'd call your OB for sure...or even just leave a message for her nurse.
  • I haven't had much cramping.I had really bad cramps that had me doubled over a couple of weeks ago and lasted for about 15 minutes. I went for my appointment the following week, they did an u/s and everything was okay. From what I understand, cramps are normal since your uterus is stretching to make room for baby. If it gets too painful or is accompanied by spotting or bleeding, then I would call the OB.
