Revamping a Play Kitchen- Paint Question

I don't often post on the nest, I'm usually on the bump but I had a question for those more knowledgeable than myself. I wasn't sure if I should post here or on renovating so let me know if I should post over there as well.

I purchased a used, wooden play kitchen for my LO. It was in a daycare so it's rather beaten up and I want to repaint it.

I wasn't sure if I should use a latex paint from a hardware store or an acrylic paint from a craft store or something else. Paint is not my forte.

I also wasn't sure if I should find something nontoxic and safe for children. What would I use in this case?

Thanks!

Re: Revamping a Play Kitchen- Paint Question

  • Any non toxic paint you use will be fine, just depends on the look you're going for.

I personally wouldn't use acrylic paint, unless it was just on the details.  It's thin and takes too many coats, and would end up being expensive.  I'd just buy a gallon of Dutch Boy or Valspar and go from there.  They have low VOC/noVOC paint and should be what you're looking for.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for the info!

  • Ditto, use latex. You probably only need a quart though. I got a wooden toy chest last year that I painted inside and out with two coats and barely made a dent in a quart of paint.
  • I think latex would be fine.
  • I'd go latex and if you want multiple colors, you could just buy the little samples they sell now. They are a semi-gloss and will mix to whatever colors you want. Cheap option :)
